The University of Montevallo provides network access to faculty, staff, and students
via traditional wired Ethernet connections as well as some wireless LAN connections.
Wireless connectivity can now be found in numerous buildings on
campus. Network connectivity is provided to each of the academic and administrative
buildings as well as the residence halls, on campus via fiber-optic cabling or,
in the case of Lyman House and the UM baseball field, via wireless bridge technology. All connections are
centrally linked with the use of a Cisco Catalyst 4006 and Hewlett Packard 5304
switches
located in Computer Services in Morgan Hall.
Internet services
Currently, internet services for the university are provided by the use of a single 45Mbps connection from the Alabama Super Computer Authority. This connection is made via a Metro Ethernet fiber connection through AT&T. Another internet connection is also maintained separately via a single AT&T business class DSL. The speed of this DSL connection is 6 Mbps downstream and 512 bps upstream. It is used mainly for testing purposes but could be used as a secondary connection to the internet in a limited fashion.
