The University of Montevallo provides network access to faculty, staff, and students
via traditional wired Ethernet connections as well as some wireless LAN connections. Wireless connectivity can now be found in numerous buildings on
campus. Network connectivity is provided to each of the academic and administrative
buildings as well as the residence halls, on campus via fiber-optic cabling or,
in the case of Lyman House and the UM baseball field, via wireless bridge technology. All connections are
centrally linked with the use of a Cisco Catalyst 4006 and Hewlett Packard 5304
switches
located in Computer Services in Morgan Hall.
Internet services
Currently, internet services for the university are provided by the use of a single T-1 provided through a state-funded grant through the Alabama SuperComputer Network and by several business class DSL lines through AT&T/BellSouth. The T-1 provides 1.5 Mbps of theoretical upload and download bandwidth for the university's servers. The business class DSLs are aggregated with a Cisco 2800 series router to provide load balancing for all users on campus. Overall, the DSLs provide a combined 48 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload bandwidth. However, due to the nature of load balancing, users actually share each individual DSL. This, combined with the limited amount of upload bandwidth, may result in varied performance issues. The University of Montevallo is currently investigating upgrade options for internet connectivity.
