Installing the Microsoft Office 2007 Converter Tool

 

Why the Converter Tool is Needed

Microsoft's new version of their Office Suite, Office 2007 saves all Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in Office Open XML format by default.  This format is based on the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and is intended to make Office 2007 documents smaller and more easily transferred between applications.  One problem with the new format, however, is that most older versions of Office will not be able to open files that use it.

Microsoft has released a converter tool that allows older version of Office to open and use Office 2007 files.  The Office 2007 Converter Tool will open Office 2007 files in older versions of Office and convert them to a usable format.

Important Note:
The Office 2007 Converter Tool is for PC users only.  Mac users, please click here for information regarding the Mac version of the tool.

 

Office 2007 Converter Tool Installation Steps

Note: These instructions were created using Internet Explorer.  If you use Firefox or another web browser, your experience in downloading and installing the Office 2007 Converter Tool may vary from what is presented here.

  1. Access the Office 2007 Converter Tool to begin the installation process by clicking this link: Office 2007 Converter.
     
  2. The following window should appear:

     
  3. Click Run to begin.
     
  4. You will see this window:

     
  5. Click Run to continue.  The installation will begin.
     
  6. The following license agreement screen will appear:

     
  7. Put a check in the box at the lower-left of the agreement, then click Continue.
     
  8. When the installation is complete, you will see this message:

     
  9. Click OK to finish.

From now on, your version of Microsoft Office will automatically open and convert Word, Excel and PowerPoint files created in Office 2007.  You may see the following message while conversions are in process:
