  • The Computer Services Library Computer Lab is located in the basement of Carmichael Library.
  • The Computer Services Library Computer Lab closes one half hour before the Library closes.
  • The Library Lab features 58 PCs and 2 Macs.
  • Scanners and printers are also available in the lab.
  • Software available in the lab includes Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and FrontPage), Internet Explorer and various academic applications as requested by faculty.
  • Printing in the lab is provided via a print management system.  Print cards can be purchased on the main floor of the library.  Prints cost $.05 for black & white and $.25 for color per page.
  • You are required to scan your UM ID when entering the lab.

Internet Access in the Residence Halls
A single wired Internet connection is available in each residence hall room.

  • A properly installed 10/100 Base T Ethernet adapter is necessary to connect to the Internet via this wired connection.  Most modern computers come with these adapters built-in.
  • The use of a hub or switch is required to connect more than one computer per room to the internet.  The use of routers is prohibited as these devices, when improperly configured, can cause serious network disruptions.
  • The Computer Services Help Desk cannot set up or support any student-owned equipment.  If you are having difficulty connecting to the Internet, you can call the Help Desk for some general tips.
  • Wireless Internet is available in three residence halls: Peck, Hanson and Wallace.

Wireless Internet
Currently, wireless network access is only available in three residence halls: Peck, Hanson and Wallace.

  • Main, Fuller, Lund, Napier, Tutwiler, and Brooke residence halls DO NOT have wireless access.
  • Brooke has a single wireless access point on the top floor Honors Hall.
  • Many students use the wired network connections in their rooms to setup their own wireless routers.  While not prohibited, such ad hoc networks must be registered with Housing and will not be supported by the University in any way.
  • Most academic and common areas on campus have wireless access.
  • Students wishing to access the University's wireless network will need a computer with an 802.11b, 802.11g or 802.11n compatible wireless adapter.
  • The wireless SSID for student access is UMNET.
  • WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) is not used.

Network Computer Registration
All student computers must be registered online before they can use the University network.

  • Before you can connect your computer to the Internet on campus, you must complete UM's online student computer registration, NetReg.  The NetReg page will be the only page you can access until you complete the NetReg form.
  • The NetReg web site can be found at http://netreg.montevallo.edu.
  • If you want to use both wired and wireless connections on the same computer, both will have to be registered.

Blackboard
Blackboard is the University of Montevallo's online classroom support tool.

  • The login page for Blackboard can be found at http://online.montevallo.edu or via ForUM.
  • University of Montevallo faculty use Blackboard to build and manage web-based content for their classes.
  • If you are taking a class that uses Blackboard, your instructor will provide you with your account information.  If you need further assistance, contact the Computer Services Help Desk.

Viruses
Any computer connected to the University's network must have up-to-date antivirus protection.

  • Computer Services will quarantine any virus-infected computer discovered on the student network.  Such computers will remain quarantined until the owner can verify that the viruses have been removed.
  • Students are responsible for keeping their computers current with antivirus and operating system updates.
