How to Configure a Macintosh
for the University Network
Introduction
Each room in the residence halls has one Ethernet connection, usually in the
wall plate where the cable TV is located (but not always). The network
connection looks very much like a telephone connection, only a little
larger. This connection is made available for students who wish to use the
University's network for high-speed Internet and e-mail services.
Installation and configuration of the network adapter in the students computer
and obtaining a patch cable is the responsibility of the student. Computer Services and/or
the Bookstore will not install or support these products. Some computer stores in the area
can perform the installation of the network card for a small fee. For information or
suggestions on where to obtain these services, you may contact the Computer Services Help
Desk at (205) 665-6520. Computer Services will only be responsible for checking bad connection
at the wall plate and verifying that the network signal is reaching that point of access.
Macintosh Ethernet Configuration Steps
(For Macintosh computers with wired network
cards)
What you will need:
- A Macintosh computer running OS 7.5 or greater
- An installed 10baseT ethernet adapter
- A patch cable of sufficient length to reach from your computer to the
wall jack
- The operating system CD's that came with your Mac
- If you wish to connect two or more computers to the Internet in your
room simultaneously, you will need to purchase and install a switch or hub.
Computer Services strongly discourages the use of routers, as these devices,
when improperly configured, can cause severe network disruptions.
- Up to date antivirus software
Configuring Your Ethernet Connection:
- Plug your patch cable into your Ethernet card and into the wall jack
then turn on your Mac.
- Most Macintosh computers will automatically connect to the
University’s network with no further configuration needed. Turn to the reverse
of this flyer for network registration instructions. If you do experience
trouble, see the appropriate section below for more details.
- Note: Changing these
settings may affect your ability to connect to
the Internet at locations other than UM. You
should make a note of your current configuration
before making any changes.
