Student Worker Skills
and Job Description

 

Candidates for student worker positions in Computer Services should have a certain basic set of skills to be able to assist the Computer Services Department efficiently and effectively, as listed below. In addition to those duties listed under job description, you may also be asked to perform other duties as needed or when so requested by the Computer Services staff. Our expectation is performance to the best of your ability on all tasks requested by Computer Services.

Minimum Required Skills

  • Interest in and general knowledge of PC’s and/or MAC computers
  • Interest in helping people
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic problem solving skills
  • Reliable and able to consistently perform as expected
  • Follow and enforce rules and policies
  • Work a set schedule (MUST show up on time for work!)

Job Description

  • Assist users in utilizing computer lab resources, including helping to format diskettes, use word processing, spreadsheet and e-mail software, print documents, and access other network resources
  • Refer users to other information resources when necessary to resolve computer usage issues (when working at the Help Desk to enter a "ticket" into the Help Desk software package)
  • Monitor computer lab activity
  • Maintain a neat, orderly and quiet computer lab to include routine cleaning of computers and computer lab floors and furniture
  • Check printer for toner and paper
  • Any other task as assigned by Computer Services
  • Maintain confidentiality of University of Montevallo and SunGard Higher Education proprietary information at all times
