Microsoft Windows XP/2000
and Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Synopsis:
Sun Microsystems has released DST-compliant updates for the versions of JRE that are still in common use on Windows computers.  Sun supports versions of Windows from Windows 98SE to the present.  Click here if you use any version of Windows prior to Windows 98SE.

The following procedures only apply to Windows 2000 and Windows XP.  Users of Windows 98SE and Windows ME should consult the Java web site for JRE upgrade instructions (www.java.com).

Disclaimer:
The potential exists that older applications and websites that use JRE won't be compatible with newer JRE versions.  If you use a JRE-dependent software product or visit a specific-JRE dependent web site as a core function of your daily work, contact your vendor before applying any JRE updates.

Procedure:

  1. Determine which versions of JRE are installed on your PC.
    1. Click Start ... Control Panel.

    2. Double click Add or Remove Programs.

    3. In the window that appears, programs installed on your PC will be listed alphabetically.  Look for entries that begin with J2SE or Java:

    4. The computer in the example above has three versions of JRE installed:
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
      • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_12

    5. Make a note of the versions of JRE installed on your PC, then close the Add or Remove Programs window.

  2. See if the versions of JRE installed on your PC are DST compliant:
    1. The following table shows which versions of JRE are compliant and which are not:

      JRE for Windows Compliance Chart

JRE Ranges DST Compliant Versions DST Non-Compliant Versions
      Java SE 6 All None
J2SE 5.0 Update 6 or later Update 5 or earlier
      J2SE 1.4 1.4.2_11 or later 1.4.2_10 or earlier
       J2SE 1.3 1.3.1_18 or later 1.3.1_17 or earlier
    1. Compare the versions of JRE noted in step 1.e above to the compliance chart.

Notice that there are four "ranges" of JRE listed in this table.  You might have multiple versions from each range installed on your PC.  If you don't have any instances of a particular range, don't worry about it, but be sure that for each range you do have at least one of the versions is DST-compliant.

    2. If the chart indicates that all versions of JRE installed on your PC are DST-compliant, you need take no further action.  Click here to proceed to Step 4: Other Desktop Productivity Software.

    3. If the chart indicates that you have a non-compliant version of JRE installed on your PC and there is no additional compliant version in that range already installed on your PC, you should install a compliant version.

  1. Installing DST-compliant versions of JRE:
    1. If you need a DST-compliant version of JRE version 5.0, visit the Java Download website and follow the instructions on the page.

    2. If you need a DST-compliant version of an earlier JRE range, visit the Java Archive website instead and follow the instructions on the page.

Note that the Java Download service may try to install the Google toolbar as part of your JRE download.  Feel free to de-select the Google toolbar when installing JRE.
