Alabama's Public Liberal Arts University

Computer Services

Macintosh OS 10.4  and OS 10.3
and Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Synopsis:
Apple has released DST-compliant JRE updates for OS 10.4 and OS 10.3 as part of their standard software update service.  If your Mac is connected to the University's network and has automatic updates enabled, your computer probably already has the DST patch installed.

Verification:
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to verify that the DST-compliant version of JRE is installed on your Mac.  Users who wish to be as thorough as possible on this issue can run Apple's Software Update manually.  If your computer needs the JRE update, it will be included in the files that Software Update recommends.

Disclaimer:
The potential exists that older applications and websites that use JRE won't be compatible with newer JRE versions.  If you use a JRE-dependent software product or visit a specific JRE-dependent website as a core function of your daily work, contact your vendor before applying any JRE updates.

Procedure:

  1. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu.

  2. In the Software Update window, select the items you want to install then click Install.

  3. Enter an administrator account name and password.

  4. After the update is complete, restart the computer if required.

  5. Repeat these steps as necessary to see if more updates are now available.  Because some software updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to repeat these steps several times to complete the software update sequence.

These steps were copied from the following Apple web page:
