Counseling Program

The counseling program at the University of Montevallo offers three different tracks: community counseling, marriage and family, and school counseling.

The community counseling track is designed to prepare counselors to work in such settings as mental health centers, substance abuse treatment programs, hospitals, agencies, and higher education settings. This track is a Counsel for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) approved program. The coordinator of the community counseling track is Dr. Mary Bartlett at bartlettm@montevallo.edu

The marriage and family track provides students with a solid foundation in family systems theory, systems counseling techniques, and current societal trends, thereby preparing students for work with individuals, couples, and families. The coordinator of the marriage and family is Dr. Stephanie Puleo at puleos@montevallo.edu

The school counseling track is designed to prepare school counselors at the elementary and secondary levels. This program track has been approved by the state board of education for Alabama Class A Certificate in Counseling and Guidance. Students must have 2 years full time education experience to qualify for admission to this track. This track is a CACREP approved program. The coordinator of the school counseling is Dr. Charlotte Daughhetee at daughc@montevallo.edu

Successful completion of core courses in any of the three tracks meets academic requirements for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential in Alabama. The marriage and family track also meets the academic requirements for a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
