Fall 2009 |

Dr. Anna McEwan and JiJi Lawley
worked the month of October with 5th graders at MES on an
inquiry based project. The students were learning what it means
to be civic-minded. The students chose a current need from the
city council's agenda, researched the need, created a MES-wide
survey, and presented the findings at City Council meeting on
Monday, October 26th. |

Dr. Adrian Cartier and Dr. Benton
Tyler are giving guest lectures at Montevallo High School to
support the high school teachers and assist with the students
transition from high school to college. |
|
|
The Math Honor Society, under the
direction of Adrian Cartier, is providing weekly tutoring to
students at Montevallo High School. |
|
|
Dr. Murdoch and 3 graduate students
in speech-language pathology provided responses to intervention
(RTI) services in articulation to 9 students in kindergarten
through 3rd grade at Montevallo Elementary School. Students
received one-on-one articulation therapy twice per week for 10
weeks. |

Spring 2009 |
|
|
|
Members of the University of Montevallo women’s soccer team
visited local Montevallo High School to embrace a class of 9th
graders, and promote the importance of health and fitness. The
initiative was organized by Chris Stano, a physical education
teacher and coach at Montevallo High. He invited Dr. Miller
Kirby, a professor of Kinesiology here at the University, to be
a guest speaker in order to inspire the teenagers to
recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and the
rewarding factors that participating in sports can offer. |

Dr. Kristin Gilbert coordinated
Montevallo Elementary School's Gifted Resource Class fun night
in January. Drs. Michael Patton, Jill Wicknick and Michael Sterner participated as session leaders.
Student Tabby Stott lead a group under the supervision of Dr.
Sally Bell. Ms. Eva Frost of the math and science department
assisted with facilitating this notable event. |

The Montevallo Connection Executive
Committee hosted the First Annual Roundtable Summit at Anna
Irvin Dining Hall. During this event, University and local
school faculty and staff collaborated to plan summer camp
opportunities. Awards were presented to faculty and staff
members at the university and in the Montevallo Schools who have
demonstrated a significant commitment to the university-school
relationship. Awards recipients included: Dr. Glee Whitsett, Dr.
Jill Wicknick, Ms. Tarsha Bluiett, Mr. Ted Metz, Ms. Jane
Clayton, Ms. Cathy Barber, Ms. Suzy Colley and Ms. Haley
Franks. Dr. Elaine Hughes was presented with the "Montevallo
Constant" award recognizing her lifelong commitment to the
collaboration between the university and Montevallo schools.

Dr. Leonor Vazquez is collaborating
with Ms. Audra Edwards to work with ELL students at MMS. Ms.
Edwards reports: "I have one very sweet female student who is
learning so quickly, but she is still in the "silent" stage and
does not like to speak in English. A couple of your (UM
students) have conversed with her and she now smiles when she
sees them coming. |

Fall 2008 |
|
|
|
Under
the recommendation of Dr. Jenifer Moore, UM Education students
volunteered to chaperone “Dinner and a Movie” night at
Montevallo Elementary School. These events were scheduled to
provide students with an enjoyable evening and parents with an
opportunity to complete holiday shopping. Secretary Debbie
Vinson commented on the great response and assistance provided
by these students |

UM women's soccer coach and
assistant athletic director Trish
Hughes, hosted
Montevallo Middle School at the University of North Alabama
soccer game on October 26th. Middle school students were
provided with a t-shirt and refreshments and the administration
participated in on-field activities as they watched UM defeat UNA 1-0 in overtime. |

Students from ED 415/515 conducted
tutoring sessions for MES students in reading and math based
upon ThinkLink results. MES students ThinkLink post-tutoring
scores increased dramatically upon completion of fall
tutoring. |
|
|
Under the direction of Dr. Houston
Byrd, UM surplus microscopes were provided to MHS students to
use in their labs. |
|
|
The Montevallo Connection provided
financial assistance to MMS to help them with the acquisition of
books awarded to them by the First Book program. Mrs. Suzy
Colley facilitated this exchange. |
|
|
MMS students attended Dr. Eric
Vacarella's students Day of the Dead presentations at the
Carmichael library. |
|
|
Students from ED 415/515 led social
skills training groups for MES students to promote positive

The Poetry Posse of MHS provided a
spectacular performance for the Montevallo Connection committee
at their regular fall meeting. |
|
|
Dr. Jenifer Moore coordinated with
Leah Pendergrass and other MES teachers for the successful
implementation of the first annual Montevallo Elementary School
Math night in October. UM students from the literacy and content
blocks assisted as parents and students participated in
grade-specific Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative
investigations. |

Ms. Tarsha Bluiett's literacy block
students participated in a penpal program with students at
Montevallo elementary school. At the completion of the semester,
content block students visited their penpals and presented them
each with a book as a gift. |
|
|

Cox-Rodgers with RIF book donations for kindergarten, first and
second graders. |
|
|
Elementary education students
dedicated several hours volunteering in the MES Santa Shop to
assist elementary students in selecting and purchasing gifts for
their friends and family members. |

Spring 2008 |

quality sampling with MES second graders. |

Dr. Jenifer Moore and Dr. Hollie
Cost collaborated with Ms. Shay Mayhan to sponsor MES kindergarten Awesome Author's day
for the 4th year in a row. During this exciting event,
kindergarten students get to showcase their creative writing,
participate in a min-author study and related literacy
activities and enjoy a snack courtesy of the Literacy Block
students at the University of Montevallo. |

Dr. Jill Wicknick served as a
speaker for the Montevallo Middle School Science Club at the
invitation of club adviser Mona Guraya. |
|
|
A free computer workshop was offered to
Montevallo’s senior adult population at the University of Montevallo campus in
Wills Hall. Ms. Jenny Avery and her ED 335 students conducted the workshop as a
joint effort of the UM Montevallo Connection and the Montevallo Parks and
Recreation Board. Dr. Carolyn Miller-Kirby coordinated this event. |

Students from Hollie Cost's ED 415/515 course
supervised elementary students during lunch to enable those
teachers to have a free lunch period. This is an incentive
system established by Dr. Annie McClain as to reward teacher
attendance. |
|
|
Su Beard, counselor at MMS, spoke to the ED
450/550 secondary students on March 13th at the University of
Montevallo. She spoke to these pre-service teachers on how to
work with guidance counselors and family/community agencies. |
|
|
Several
University of Montevallo students, faculty and staff members
visited Montevallo Elementary School and joined forces with
other prominent community leaders in an effort to increase
reading awareness by participating in the United We Read
project. The project takes place during Black History Month and
encourages an appreciation of African-American culture. Each
volunteer read a book that was pre-selected by the Literacy
Council and all the children received a free copy of the book. |

Dr. Joe Walsh participated as a team member
during the Southern Regional Education Board's recent Technical
Assistance Visit at Montevallo Middle School. As a component of
the "Making Middle Grades Work" initiative, the purpose of this
comprehensive site visit was to assist school leaders and
teachers in identifying changes needed to improve student
achievement in the middle grades. Program participation is
voluntary and attests to Montevallo Middle School's unwavering
commitment to high-quality teaching and learning. |

Ms.
Rebecca Beaty of the American Village invited Dr. Janie
Hubbard’s elementary social studies methods students to
design lesson plans to support one of their most effective
programs, Make a
Difference!
Citizenship Challenge: Fight for the Future with the Past!
The university students collaborated to research and write
the lesson plans, as well as a few units, which will be used
as resources for Alabama teachers. The plans help teachers
introduce topics that are addressed in the program and also
prepare elementary students to effectively participate in
the vignettes during their field trips to the American
Village.

Dr. Kathy King presented a writer's workshop to
Audra Edwards', 7th and 8th grade GRC students at Montevallo
Middle School. Dr. King stated "It was a privilege to watch
Audra at work and to see how alive -- to words and images and
sounds -- many of these kids were." |
|
|
Under the authorization of Dr. Terry Roberson,
Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs and Cynthia Jarrett,
Vice President of Business Affairs, the university awarded two
scholarships for Montevallo High School students. These
scholarships enable qualified students to dually enroll in a
university course during their senior year. This is a standing
scholarship that will be awarded each semester. |

At the invitation of Audra Edwards, Montevallo
Middle School English and GRC literature teacher, Dr. Jim
Murphy, English professor visited 8th graders at the middle
school to discuss poetry. |
|
|
Dr. Terry Roberson, Interim VPAA and Dr. Jack
Riley, Graduate Dean extended an offer to Montevallo school
faculty and administration to audit University courses at no
cost. In exchange, the school faculty and administration will
continue opening their classrooms to UM students for observation
and other educational experiences. |
|
|
Under the direction of UM counseling faculty,
Drs. Puleo,
Bartlett and Daughhetee and MHS faculty, Karen Coats and Margot
Gravelet, UM counseling
students are scheduled to provide group counseling for MHS
students who are at-risk academically.

Theatre adjunct, Jeanmarie Collins is conducting
a project for a gifted class fundraiser with MES gifted teacher
Jo Ellen Mattingly. She is also leading theatre games for
students with special needs in Ms. Madonia's class. |

Martin, Dr. Hollie Cost is teaching social skills lessons to a
group of 4th graders. |

Dr. Alex Bruce and English faculty members are
collaborating with MHS teachers to identify ways to
prepare high school students for the realities of college
experiences. |

During the
Fall 2007 semester, Dr. Linda Murdock and a group of graduate
students in speech-language pathology provided weekly, small
group phonological awareness instruction to kindergarteners at
risk for reading failure. |

Dr. Mike Hardig responded to a request from Mona
Guraya, science club sponsor, by arranging for microscope
donations to MMS. |
|
|
UM student organizations SEA/SCEC and AEL provided
scholarships for two MES students to attend Camp Cosby |
|
|
UM
Phase II students are hosted by MHS
teachers for a 94 hour lab experience this semester in which
students have the chance to shadow and teach |
