MUS 500 Measurement and Research In Music      Credit, 3 hours
Includes a survey of standardized tests for aptitude and achievement in music; discussion of how descriptive, experimental, and philosophical types of research might be used in the field of music; basic statistical techniques necessary for constructing or selecting tests and for interpreting test/research data.

MUS 520 History and Philosophy of Music Education      Credit, 3 hours
A study of the history of music in education in the United States, with emphasis on current teaching philosophies and methods and their origins.

MUS 530 Advanced Music History      Credit, 3 hours
An examination of reference materials and basic research techniques in music history including intensive study of a selected topic. Prerequisites: MUS 351, 352, or equivalent.

MUS 541 Orchestration      Credit, 2 hours
A study of instrumentation including history, ranges, and tonal characteristics of instruments. Elementary scoring for band and orchestra. Prerequisite: MUS 113 or equivalent.

MUS 543 Teaching of Music in the Elementary School/Choral      Credit, 3 hours
Designed to prepare the graduate student in choral/general music education for intern teaching in the secondary school; includes survey of the appropriate literature, administrative techniques, and performance support groups. Prerequisites: Graduate standing and permission of instructor.

MUS 544 Teaching of Music in the Elementary School/Instrumental      Credit, 3 hours
Materials and methods course for the student seeking the Class A certificate in music education; designed to provide basic knowledge as well as basic, intermediate, and advanced skills necessary for teaching in the elementary school. Prerequisites: Graduate standing and permission of instructor.

MUS 545 Teaching of Music in the High School/Choral      Credit, 3 hours
Designed to prepare the graduate student in choral/general music education for intern teaching in the secondary school. Includes survey of the appropriate literature, administrative techniques, and performance support groups. Prerequisites: Graduate standing and permission of instructor.

MUS 546 Teaching of Music in the High School/Instrumental      Credit, 3 hours
Designed to prepare the graduate student in instrumental music education for intern teaching at the secondary level. In addition to a survey of the literature, administrative techniques, and performance support groups, components of a well-rounded instrumental program are stressed: marching band, concert/symphonic band, jazz band, beginner band, half-time presentations, etc. Prerequisites: Graduate standing and permission of instructor.

MUS 547 Directed Teaching and Observation of Music at the Elementary and Secondary School Levels/Choral      Credit, 8 hours
Intern teaching in public elementary and secondary schools; includes a weekly seminar focusing on intern experiences and problems in teaching. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.

MUS 548 Directed Teaching and Observation of Music at the Elementary and Secondary School Levels/Instrumental      Credit, 8 hours
Intern teaching in public elementary and secondary schools; includes a weekly seminar focusing on intern experiences and problems in teaching. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.

MUS 552 Practicum in Music Education: Instrumental      Credit, 3 hours
Practical application, in a field situation, of organizational and instructional techniques in instrumental music education. Requires the design and implementation of a project relating to the teaching of instrumental music.

MUS 553 Practicum in Music Education: Vocal/Choral      Credit, 3 hours
Practical application, in a field situation, of organizational and instructional techniques in vocal/choral music education. Requires the design and implementation of a project relating to the teaching of vocal/choral music.

MUS 556 Teaching Music Theory, History, and Literature      Credit, 3 hours
An examination of current pedagogical concepts, materials, and methods used in teaching music fundamentals and introductory courses in music history-literature.

MUS 557 Advanced Stylistic Analysis      Credit, 3 hours
Concepts involved in analyzing style in music, with special reference to techniques of macroanalysis and microanalysis. Prerequisite: MUS 213 or equivalent.

MUS 561 Vocal Pedagogy      Credit, 3 hours
Learning to teach the principles of correct vocal production, emphasizing methods for the studio teacher; includes anatomical and acoustical study of the vocal mechanism, and exercises designed to promote freedom and efficiency in singing; practicum experience in teaching the beginning voice student. Prerequisites: Background in voice study, permission of instructor.

MUS 562 Vocal Ensemble Literature      Credit, 3 hours
Study of scores and performance problems related to literature for various sizes of vocal ensembles. Prerequisites: MUS 222 or equivalent, vocal ensemble experience and permission of instructor.

MUS 567 Wind Ensemble Literature      Credit, 3 hours
A study of scores and performance problems related to literature for the large wind ensemble. Reference will include 20th-century compositions primarily, but consideration will also be given to transcriptions of earlier music. Prerequisites: MUS 222 or equivalent and permission of instructor.

MUS 568 Directed Individual Study in Music Theory/Composition      Credit, 1–4 hours
Designed to provide opportunity for intensive and independent inquiry in areas of music theory/composition which lie outside the scope of other graduate classes; not intended as substitute for required courses in graduate curriculum. Prerequisites: Approval of Graduate Adviser and permission of instructor.

MUS 569 Directed Individual Study in Music History/Literature      Credit, 1–4 hours
Designed to provide opportunity for intensive and independent inquiry in areas of music history which lie outside the scope of other graduate classes; not intended as substitute for required course in graduate curriculum. Prerequisites: Approval of Graduate Adviser, permission of instructor.

MUS 570 Directed Individual Study in Conducting      Credit, 1–4 hours
Designed to provide opportunity for intensive and independent study in art of conducting; includes development and refinement of technique, score study, rehearsal techniques. Prerequisites: Approval of Graduate Adviser and permission of instructor.

MUS 571 Directed Individual Study in Music Education      Credit, 1–4 hours
Designed to provide opportunity for intensive and independent inquiry in areas of music education which are not included in inquiry in other graduate classes; cannot be used as substitute for any music education courses required by curriculum. Prerequisites: Approval of Graduate Adviser and permission of instructor.

MUS 576 Music Education Seminar      Credit, 3 hours
Investigation of measurement and evaluation in music education; seminar centered around intern teaching experience addressing pedagogical areas needing emphasis or strengthening. Prerequisite: MUS 545 or 546.

MUS 587 Advanced Vocal Literature      Credit, 3 hours
Directed individual study in a designated area of vocal literature. Prerequisites: Undergraduate study in voice and vocal literature, proficiency in German, French, Italian and English diction and permission of instructor.

MUS 588 Advanced Brass Literature      Credit, 3 hours
Directed individual study in a designated area of brass literature.

MUS 589 Advanced Woodwind Literature      Credit, 3 hours
Directed individual study in a designated area of woodwind literature.

MUS 590 Advanced Percussion Literature      Credit, 3 hours
Directed individual study in percussion literature.

MUS 595 Advanced Conducting      Credit, 2 hours
Review of basic baton gestures; advanced techniques of interpretation, in-depth score study and analysis, and moving beyond the gesture.

MUS 676 Individual Topics in Music Education I      Credit, 3 hours
Directed individual study in a music education topic selected to suit the student’s needs. Prerequisites: MUS 500, or the equivalent and permission of the instructor.
