Program:

The University of Montevallo is pleased to offer a Major in Social Science, consisting of courses in Sociology, Political Science, History, and Geography.  Students have a choice to major in Social Science only or major in Social Science with a teaching certificate.  Should a student choose teacher certification, other specific Education and Social Science courses are also required.

Montevallo's Social Science Program is cross-disciplinary and offers you a broad exposure to a liberal arts education.  Students develop judicious thinking through the study of society, politics, History and Geography.

Junior and Senior level courses are taught in small classes that promote class discussion.  Individual attention is given to you by a highly qualified and diverse faculty.

Required Courses:

Candidates for the B.A. or B.S. degree in Social Science must fulfill the general requirements for those degrees.  They must also complete 54 hours in Social-Science courses, including:

  • HIST 211 History of the United States I

  • HIST 212 History of the United States II

  • HIST elective (non-American)

  • POS 200 American National Government

  • POS 455 International Relations

  • POS elective

  • SOC 230 Introduction to Sociology

  • SOC 480 Development of Sociological Theory

  • SOC elective

  • GEOG 231 World Regional Geography

  • GEOG elective

  • POS / SOC 370 Research Methods in Social Sciences OR

  • SWK / SOC 355 Research in Social Welfare

  • EC 231 Introduction to Macroeconomics

  • POS/HIST/SOC 485 Senior Seminar in Social Science

  • 12 hours from one field of concentration (History, Sociology, or Political Science)

Candidates who wish to pursue Option II (AFY Graduate) or Option III (Undergraduate / AFY) must successfully complete the following courses to meet the prerequisites for admission to the AFY program:  HIST 370 or HIST 355, GEOG 331, HIST 485 or HIST 491, HIST 472, and three upper-level history electives.  In addition, students may complete one POS elective or one SOC elective instead of both.  If you are planning on applying for the AFY program make sure to inform your advisor so together you can make the best advising and registration choices.

Scholarships: Scholarships available for Social Science include the John B. Walters Scholarship.  This scholarship is  awarded to enrolled students majoring in a Social Science field (Social Science, Political Science, Sociology, History) who have achieved at least sophomore standing, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.  Preference is given to applicants who are preparing for a career in international relations.  Applications are available through the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences.  The deadline is February 1 for the fall awards.

Students majoring in Social Science have a wide variety of exciting career options from which to choose.  Social Science is an excellent pre-professional degree with many graduates choosing to continue their education at law school or in education.  The Program offers you excellent preparation for graduate school in any of the core disciplines (Sociology, History, Political Science, and Geography).  As a Social Science Major, you can look forward to a wide array of high paying careers where a person's ability to use problem solving skills, careful judgment, write creatively, and think critically is highly desirable.
