The
Alabama Traffic Safety Center at the
University of Montevallo attempts to address
the Young Driver crash problem through the delivery of two one-day courses. These
two courses have been developed based upon novice and recently licensed driver crash
risk factors.
Based upon the crash statistics of teen
drivers in Alabama, specific course content
and hands-on driving tasks are integrated into
a full-day of developmental driving
activities.
The Novice Driver Training Course
(NDTC) is geared
for a young driver holding a learner's license
(permit). This
course focuses on basic vehicle control and
proper execution of fundamental driving
skills. Extensive use of line-of-sight and
path-of-travel principles are taught to
support the development of low risk driving
habits. Such topics as targeting, smooth
braking, cornering, and acceleration will be emphasized
utilizing the Skid Monster driver training
vehicle. Because of the specialized
nature of the fundamental concepts taught in
this course, the course incorporates a student
instructor ratio of 3 students per
instructor, a total of 6 students per class..
Additional course information is located at the
NDTC web page.
The Young Driver Risk Reduction Course
(YDRRC) is
offered to teen drivers, up to age 19, who
have a valid driver's license. In this course
students will experience classroom,
simulation, and hands-on driving activities.
Students will be exposed to those risk factors
dominating the crash involvement of recently
licensed teen drivers. This course
incorporates risk management activities and
low risk driving concepts. Additional Young Driver Risk
Reduction Course information is located at the
YDRRC web
page.
