Outstanding Motorcycle Safety Support - Stanley Skipworth

The Alabama Motorcycle Safety Program (ATSC) named Stanley Skipworth of Tuscumbia as this year’s recipient of the Alabama, Outstanding Motorcycle Safety Support award. Mr. Skipworth identified the void the Alabama Motorcycle Safety Program was experiencing by not having an active training site in the Northwest corner of the state. As an advocate of motorcycle safety, Stanley displayed a “can do” attitude and stated that he would work through channels to make sure the AMSP would have a Tuscumbia training site by the end of the spring. Good to his word, Stanley worked with contacts in the Colbert County Commission and secured the motorcycle training issue as an item on the March 21, 2006 Commission’s agenda. Through his efforts, the Colbert County Commission gave unanimous consent to the use of the Colbert County Board of Education building and parking lot for rider training. At this point, Stanley arranged for the moving of two 40 foot parking lot lights with accompanying four foot concrete bases off of the range site. How did he do this? He arranged to borrow a back hoe and moved the lights himself. He then filled in the holes in the pavement. He then arranged for a new light fixture to be donated to the site, so that security lighting was increased to a level brighter than the lighting of the now removed light posts. When it came time to lie out and paint the range on April 14, there was Stanley again to lend a hand. On May 12-14, 2006 the first Basic Rider Course was offered in Tuscumbia. The Alabama Motorcycle Safety Program is extremely indebted to Stanley Skipworth for his tireless efforts in securing MSF Rider Training Courses for the citizens of Northwest Alabama. Mr. Skipworth was honored by the Alabama Motorcycle Safety Program at a reception and luncheon in Tuscumbia on October 12.
