MONTEVALLO TO PLAY FOR GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP ON WEDNESDAY DESPITE LOSS TO No. 7 SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
 

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (5/6) -- A ninth inning rally came up short as the University of Montevallo dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 7 Southern Arkansas University at the 2008 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, UM still advances to the championship game of the tournament by virtue of remaining undefeated through their first three games. The Falcons received a "bye" towards the championship game and will meet the winner between SAU (44-9) and No. 2 Delta State University. SAU and DSU is scheduled to play an elimination game Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will face UM for the Gulf South Conference Championship Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

Against SAU, UM collected nine hits, two each by Eric Moore, Dustin Rhodes and Ryan Norman. Jason Sheehan went the first five innings, allowed two runs and five hits and took the loss on the mound. Daniel Hicks went the final four innings, allowing one run and four hits.

Norman hit his fourth home run of the season to give UM a 1-0 lead in the third inning. A two-RBI double by Tyler Maag gave SAU a 2-1 lead. SAU closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh inning.

SAU threatened to add to their lead in the eighth inning. Brantly Clay threw out one runner attempting to move from first to third on a base hit, and started a relay (Clay to B.J. Holloway to Norman) to throw out a second runner at the plate.

The Falcons had two runners on base each in the eighth and ninth innings, but failed to score. UM stranded the game-tying runners at second and third base in the ninth.

UM (36-24) will compete for their first-ever Gulf South Conference championship against their fifth consecutive Top 30 team (DSU or SAU) Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

MONTEVALLO REMAINS UNDEFEATED IN WINNERS BRACKET -- FALCONS DEFEAT No. 2 DELTA STATE AT GSC TOURNAMENT
 

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (5/5) -- The Falcons pushed across four runs in the fourth and fifth innings en route to an 11-2 victory over No. 2 Delta State University in the third round of the 2008 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. on Monday.

For the third consecutive night, the Falcons earned a victory over a Top 30 team. The Falcons defeated No. 7 Southern Arkansas (12-3) on Saturday, and No. 11 Valdosta State (6-5, 10 inn.) on Sunday. UM is the only unranked team, among the four remaining teams in the tournament.

The Falcons also snapped a 24-game winning streak by DSU, the longest active streak of the season until tonight.

UM collected 16 hits, five by Jeremy Jones (5-for-5) who becomes the latest Falcon to tie a single-game record for base hits. Daniel Furuto also went 5-for-5 against Georgia Southwestern earlier this season.

Nate Russ went the final 5 2/3 innings, did not allow a run, allowed four hits, walked two and struck out one batter to earn his fourth victory of the season. Brandon Aldridge started for UM, and allowed two runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings.

UM scored first on an RBI ground out by Chris Cooper in the first inning. After DSU scored two runs in the third inning, the Falcons took advantage of two Statesmen errors and pushed across four runs in the fourth inning for a 5-2 lead. The Falcons broke the game open in the fifth, scoring four more runs, on an RBI single by Aaron Faust, a two RBI double by Dustin Rhodes and an RBI single by Ryan Norman. The RBI collected by Rhodes and Norman came with two outs.

The Falcons closed out the scoring with single runs in the seventh and ninth innings.

UM (36-23) will advance to fourth day action at the GSC Baseball Championships. The Falcons are the only undefeated team in the tournament and have clinched a berth in the championship game on Wednesday.

UM will have a rematch with No. 7 Southern Arkansas University in a non-elimination game Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. If UM defeats SAU, the Falcons will play the championship game against either Valdosta State or Delta State Wednesday at 1 p.m., with an if-necessary game to be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. If SAU defeats UM, then SAU will advance to an elimination game against either VSU or DSU at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with the winner facing the Falcons for the GSC championship 30 minutes after the conclusion of that game, or 4:30 p.m.

MONTEVALLO ADVANCES TO THIRD ROUND OF GSC TOURNAMENT -- FALCONS DEFEAT No. 11 VALDOSTA STATE IN EXTRA INNINGS
 

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (5/4) -- Ryan Norman delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the University of Montevallo to a 6-5 victory over No. 11 Valdosta State University in the second round of the 2008 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. on Sunday.

UM posted their second consecutive victory over a Top 30 team. The Falcons defeated No. 7 Southern Arkansas (12-3) on Saturday.

VSU (35-17-1) made up a 5-1 deficit, scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth innings before tying the game in the ninth. The Blazers had an opportunity to plate a go-ahead run. With a runner on third, a ball got past Norman at the plate. Shawn Keill attempted to score, but was thrown out at the plate when Norman got the ball back to UM relief pitcher Zach Andrews for the final out of the inning.

UM collected 13 hits, three by Brantly Clay, who led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a base hit. After moving up to second via a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Brett Hall, Norman laced a pitch past VSU reserve Jessie Barfield down the right field line, scoring Clay with the game-winning run.

Andrews went the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his sixth victory of the season. Jeffrey Reach started for UM, going the first 6 1/3 innings, and allowing two runs and three hits, while striking out two. After Nate Russ pitched to one batter in the seventh inning, Garett Mims went the next two innings and was within one out of earning a save.

Trailing 1-0, UM tied the game in the second on a scoring fly ball by Norman. In the fourth inning, solo home runs by Daniel Furuto (12th of season) and Dustin Rhodes (6th of season) gave UM a 3-1 lead. The lead increased to 5-1 in the sixth inning on a 2-run home run by Clay (7th of season).

UM (35-23) remains undefeated in the double-elimination tournament and will continue in the winners bracket. The Falcons will face their third consecutive Top 30 team, No. 2 Delta State University Monday night at 7:30 p.m. DSU defeated OBU, 7-1, late Sunday night.

MONTEVALLO DEFEATS No. 7 SOUTHERN ARKANSAS AT GSC TOURNAMENT -- FALCONS ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND
 

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (5/3) -- A five-run fifth inning and key two-out base hits propelled the University of Montevallo to a 12-3 victory over No. 7 Southern Arkansas University in the opening round of the 2008 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. on Saturday.

UM collected 15 hits, three each by Eric Moore and Brantly Clay. Moore along with B.J. Holloway drove in three RBI each.

Of the 12 runs scored by UM, eight were scored with two outs, including four of the five runs in the fifth inning.

Zac Blakney went the first 4 1/3 innings, allowed three runs and struck out five. Nate Russ went the rest of the way (4 2/3 innings), did not allow a run, walked one and struck out five to earn his third victory of the season. SAU starting pitcher Cody Jones entered the game with a 9-0 record and suffered his first loss of the season.

The Falcons took advantage of a SAU error, pushing across three unearned runs in the second inning. With runners at first and second, Brett Hall reached on a fielders choice on a SAU fielding error. An RBI groundout by Ryan Norman scored one run, and a two-out, two-RBI single by B.J. Holloway made it a 3-0 game.

Brantly Clay had a two-out, RBI single in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. John Long had a solo home run in the bottom of the third, making it a 4-1 game.

In the fifth, Daniel Furuto had an RBI single. After the second out was made, Clay had an RBI double, while Norman added an RBI single for a 7-1 lead. After a pitching change, an RBI single by Holloway and RBI double by Moore increased the lead to 9-1.

SAU scored two in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead to 9-3.

UM scored a run in the seventh (RBI double by Moore) and two in the eighth (RBI singles by Dustin Rhodes and Moore) to close out the scoring.

SAU stranded 13 runners on base, and left the bases loaded in two different innings. The Falcon defense also contributed to key outs. A diving stop by Jeremy Jones saved a potential run and closed out the fourth inning. Clay fielded a base hit and threw out an SAU runner (second base) in the eighth inning. UM left eight runners on base.

UM (34-23) will continue in the winners bracket of the tournament. The Falcons will meet No. 11 Valdosta State University in a second round game Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. VSU defeated Harding University 4-3, in a first-round game on Saturday. MONTEVALLO SWEEPS OAKLAND CITY ON SENIOR DAY SUNDAY -- FALCONS TO COMPETE AT 2008 GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT BEGINNING SATURDAY
 

MONTEVALLO (4/27) -- Zac Blakney tossed a complete game four hitter to earn his eighth victory of the season, while Jeffrey Reach allowed one run and two hits in the second game as the University of Montevallo completed a three-game series sweep of Oakland City University, defeating OCU 4-0 and 9-2 at Johnson Field on Sunday.

Blakney completed the two-day, four hit shutout, as he began Saturday night and progressed to the top of the third when the game was suspended due to weather. He resumed on Sunday and managed to strikeout eight batters for a total of 11 batters. The 11 batters tied a personal best. Blakney managed to strike out 11 against Arkansas-Monticello earlier this season.

UM had 10 hits in the first game, two each by Eric Moore, Jeremy Jones, Chris Cooper and B.J. Holloway. UM scored two runs in the first, before adding single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Cooper hit his 10th home run of the season (as a pinch hitter) in the fourth inning.

In the second game, Reach pitched six innings and struck out seven batters to earn his seventh victory of the season.  UM had 15 hits, three by Holloway, which included his third home run of the season. Ryan Norman also hit a home run, his third of the season.

Trailing 1-0, UM scored single runs in the first and second inning, then broke the game open with three runs in the third and a run in the fourth for 6-1 lead. OCU scored a run in the top of the fifth, while UM scored three in the bottom of the fifth to close out the scoring.

UM (33-23) will next compete at the 2008 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships, beginning Saturday in Millington, Tenn. UM is the No. 3 seed (East) in the eight-team double elimination tournament. MONTEVALLO DEFEATS OAKLAND CITY -- SECOND GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER SUSPENDED DUE TO WEATHER -- RESCHEDULED FOR SENIOR DAY SUNDAY
 

MONTEVALLO (4/26) -- The Falcons pounded out 15 base hits, en route to an 11-1 victory over Oakland City University, in a non-conference baseball game at Johnson Field on Saturday.

The game was called in the bottom of the 8th inning on the 10-run rule.

The second game between UM and OCU was suspended with UM leading OCU 2-0, and OCU batting in the top of the third inning.

Brandon Aldridge pitched seven innings, allowing a run and six hits, while walking two and collecting four strikeouts for his fourth victory of the season. Nate Russ pitched the eighth inning.

Eric Moore and Jeremy Jones had three hits each. Jones drove in four runs and was a double short of hitting for the cycle. Jones hit his fifth home run of the season in the first inning, produced an RBI single in the third inning, and tripled to right center field in the sixth inning.

Daniel Furuto hit his team-leading 11th home run in the third inning, and established a new school career record for being hit by a pitch, as he was plunked (5th inning) for the 11th time this season and give the Birmingham native 51 for his career, to eclipse the previous record of 50, set by J.D. Pruitt (2006-07).

Ryan Norman also hit a home run, his second of the season, in the fourth inning.

Leading 4-0, UM picked up a run in the fifth inning (RBI single by Dustin Rhodes) and three runs in the sixth (2 RBI triple by Jones, RBI single by Chris Cooper). After OCU (7-25) scored their run in the seventh, UM scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth.

UM (31-23) and OCU will complete the suspended game first, then complete a doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the halted game. MONTEVALLO SWEPT BY No. 25 OUACHITA BAPTIST IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER
 

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (4/22) -- The Falcons were swept by No. 25 Ouachita Baptist University, in a non-conference baseball doubleheader in Arkadelphia, Ark. on Tuesday.

OBU (39-12) hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to post a 6-4 victory over UM and earn a doubleheader sweep. OBU defeated UM, 6-2, in game one.

Chris Cooper had six hits on the afternoon, going 4-for-4 with a run scored in game one, and collecting two hits in game two. UM had eight hits in game one, but committed three errors. OBU scored two runs in the first, one in the second and two runs in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. In the sixth, a two-RBI single by Aaron Faust made it a 5-2 game. OBU scored a run in the sixth to close out the scoring. Jason Sheehan went the first 4 1/3 innings and took the loss. Jason Ellis went the final 1 2/3 innings.

In game two, UM had nine hits. In addition to Cooper, Jeremy Jones and Brantly Clay had two hits each. UM scored a run in the fourth on a solo home run by Cooper, his ninth of the season. After OBU scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, UM scored three unearned runs in the sixth. Jones reached on a base hit, stole second and scored when Dustin Rhodes struck out swinging, but reached on a fielding error for one unearned run. After Faust had a sacrifice bunt, Clay hit a two-run home run, his sixth of the season for a 4-2 lead. Daniel Hicks went the first 3 2/3 innings on the mound. Zach Andrews and Garett Mims also pitched for UM with Mims taking the loss.

UM (30-23) will host Oakland City University for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. There will be a special ceremony honoring the inaugural Falcon baseball team from 1958 between games of the doubleheader. MONTEVALLO DEFEATS No. 18 VALDOSTA STATE IN GSC SERIES FINALE
 

VALDOSTA, Ga. (4/20) – An RBI single by B.J. Holloway in the top of the 10th inning lifted the University of Montevallo to a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Valdosta State University in a Gulf South Conference baseball game played at Billy Grant Field in Valdosta, Ga. Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, UM managed to earn at least one conference victory in each of the seven weeks of GSC East Division play.

Garett Mims went the final three innings, did not allow a run, and struck out the three batters, including the final out in the bottom of the 10th inning,  to earn his third victory of the season. Jeffrey Reach started for UM and went the first seven innings, allowing one run and five hits.

VSU (11-3 GSC, 30-15-1) scored their run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Blaine Wilson hit a double, moved up to third on a groundout and scored on a balk.

The score held until the seventh inning. With one out, Chris Cooper hit his eighth home run of the season to left center field to tie the game at 1-1.

UM had five hits on the day, two each by Cooper and Brantly Clay.

UM (12-6 GSC, 30-21) has concluded the Gulf South Conference East Division schedule. UM travels to Ouachita Baptist University for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m.

No. 18 VALDOSTA STATE SWEEPS MONTEVALLO IN GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER
 

VALDOSTA, Ga. (4/19) -- The University of Montevallo ended up on the short end of two losses as the Falcons were swept by No. 18 Valdosta State University, 8-7 and 1-0, in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Billy Grant Field in Valdosta, Ga. on Saturday.

In game one, UM held a 7-2 lead, however the host Blazers (11-2 GSC, 30-14-1) pushed across five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. An RBI groundout by the Blazers Calem Ray in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 7-7 tie. The Falcons collected seven hits in game one, two each by Eric Moore and Daniel Furuto. Brandon Aldridge went the first 3 2/3 innings, while Nate Russ went the final 4 1/3 innings and took the loss in relief.

Furuto hit his 10th home run (two-run HR) in the first inning, while Moore hit his seventh home run of the season in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. After VSU scored two in the bottom of the second, the Falcons answered with two runs in the third (RBI double by Brantly Clay, RBI single by Moore) for a 5-2 lead. UM then added two runs in the top of the fourth (RBI single Aaron Faust, scoring fly ball by Clay) for a 7-2 lead.

In game two, Zac Blakney went the distance, scattered six hits, struck out eight and was the hard-luck loser on the mound. VSU scored the only run of the game, an unearned run in the fourth inning.
The Falcons had three hits in game two, and had runners at first and third with no one out in the final inning, but could not push across the tying run.

MONTEVALLO DEFEATS WEST FLORIDA IN NON-CONFERENCE GAME
 

MONTGOMERY (4/16) -- The Falcons pushed across 14 runs and 11 hits over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, en route to a 16-6 victory over the University of West Florida, in a non-conference game played at Paterson Field in Montgomery on Wednesday.

The game was called in the 8th inning on the 10-run rule.

UM collected 15 hits on the day, three by Dustin Rhodes, who also drove in four RBI.

Jason Sheehan started for UM and went the first 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, four hits, three walks with two strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season. Garett Mims went the next 1 1/3 innings and struck out three. Nate Russ also threw one inning.

Trailing 3-0, UM scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Daniel Furuto and a RBI groundout by Rhodes.

UM gained the lead in the sixth inning. An RBI single by Rhodes tied the game at 3-3, while a 2-RBI single by Joe Prokop gave the Falcons the lead for good. The Falcons broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh inning and four runs in the eighth inning.

UWF closed out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The game, considered an in-region game, will not count towards the conference standings.

MONTEVALLO PUNCHES TICKET FOR THE POSTSEASON WITH VICTORY OVER WEST GEORGIA -- FALCONS TIE SINGLE GAME HOME RUN RECORD
 

MONTEVALLO (4/13) -- A Falcon team and individual game record was tied, as the University of Montevallo posted a 15-8 victory over the University of West Georgia, in a Gulf South Conference baseball game played at Johnson Field on Sunday.

As a team, the Falcons hit seven home runs to tie a single-game record. UM hit seven home runs in a victory at Columbus State in 2007.

Eric Moore also tied a single-game record with three home runs. He will share the record with Daniel Furuto, who hit three home runs against West Alabama earlier this season and former Falcons Mark Hearn (1982) and Steve Smitherman (1983). Jeremy Jones hit two home runs, while Chris Cooper and Aaron Faust also hit home runs.

The victory also clinches the Falcons a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, to be played in Millington, Tenn. in May.

UM collected 18 hits on the day. Jones along with Brantly Clay had three hits each.

Jeffrey Reach started on the mound for the Falcons, gave up four runs and five hits in six innings of work, while walking three and collecting eight strikeouts to post his sixth victory of the season. Garett Mims went the next 1 1/3 innings, while Zach Andrews went the final 1 2/3 innings.

Jones and Cooper had back-to-back home runs in the first inning to start the scoring. Clay added an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. UM then broke the game open in the second innings, pushing across six runs highlighted by a 2-run home run by Moore and a 2-RBI single by Ryan Norman.

After UWG scored a run in the third inning, UM scored two more runs on back-to-back home runs by Moore and Jones. Faust led off the fourth inning with a home run for a 12-1 lead.

UWG trimmed into the lead, scoring three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh making it a 12-7 game. UWG scored three in the seventh, UWG had a run in the eighth to close out the scoring.

UM (11-4 GSC, 28-19) will next play the University of West Florida in a non-conference, neutral site game Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at Paterson Field, in Montgomery, Ala.

MONTEVALLO SWEEPS WEST GEORGIA IN GSC DOUBLEHEADER
 

MONTEVALLO (4/12) -- Zac Blakney earned a complete game victory in game two, while Aaron Faust drove in five runs in game one, as the University of Montevallo baseball team managed a sweep over the University of West Georgia, in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader played at Johnson Field on Saturday.

UM posted a 9-3 victory in game two, after recording an 8-6 victory over the Wolves in game one.

In game one, UM collected 14 hits, three each by Faust and Chris Cooper. Faust hit two home runs and drove in five runs. Brandon Aldridge started for UM and went the first 3 1/3 innings. Nate Russ went the final 5 2/3 innings, allowed one earned run, six hits and one walk, while collecting eight strikeouts to earn his second victory of the season.

Faust hit a three-run home run in the first. UWG tied the game in the second and added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-3 lead. Faust tied the game with his second home run in the bottom of the fifth. UM added a run in the bottom of the sixth (RBI single by B.J. Holloway), however UWG tied the game in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, UM regained  the lead via an RBI single by Ryan Norman. UM closed the scoring with a run in the eighth (RBI triple by Cooper).

In the second game, Blakney allowed three runs and eight hits, while walking three and collecting six strikeouts for his seventh victory overall and second complete game victory of the season.

UM had 11 hits in the second game, two each by Cooper and Ryan Norman. UM scored a run in the first (RBI single by Daniel Furuto) and second (RBI single by Eric Moore) for a 2-0 lead. UM then then scored five in the third inning, via home runs by Dustin Rhodes (3-run HR) and Holloway (2-run HR). UWG scored two in the fifth and one run in the sixth.

UM (10-4 GSC, 27-19) and UWG will close the three-game weekend series Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on UM Internet Radio, with Arky Shea Bartlett describing the play-by-play action. No. 6 DELTA STATE SWEEPS SERIES OVER MONTEVALLO
 

MONTEVALLO (4/9) -- The visiting Statesmen pushed across four runs in the top of the eighth inning, to post an 9-8 victory over the University of Montevallo, in a non-conference baseball game played at Johnson Field on Wednesday.

UM had eight hits on the day, two by Chris Cooper. Jason Sheehan started for UM and went the first five innings. Heath Wilson came in for one inning. Nate Russ went the next two innings and took the loss. Garett Mims pitched the ninth inning.

For the second consecutive game, a two-run home run (Dustin Rhodes, fourth of season), this time in the second inning, gave UM a 2-0 lead.

After DSU tied the game in the top of the third, UM regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Eric Moore reached on a base hit, and stole second (33rd stolen base of season). Moore moved to third on a fly ball by Jeremy Jones and then scored on an RBI single by Cooper.

UM scored three runs in the fourth, two via a three-base throwing error. B.J. Holloway added an RBI single to make it a 6-2 game.

DSU scored a run in the fifth inning and two runs in the seventh inning to trim the lead to 6-5. UM picked up two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh, for an 8-5 lead.

After surrendering the four runs, Cooper had a one-out base hit in the bottom of the ninth inning, but was left stranded to end the game.

MONTEVALLO (4/8) -- A late inning rally fell short as the University of Montevallo dropped a 9-7 decision to No. 6 Delta State University, in a non-conference baseball game played at Johnson Field on Tuesday.

UM collected eight hits, two each by Daniel Furuto and Chris Cooper. Furuto also drove in three runs, two via a home run, his ninth of the season.

Daniel Hicks started for UM, went the first six innings and took the loss. Heath Wilson threw one inning and did not allow an earned run. Nate Russ went the final two innings and did not allow a run or a hit.

In the first inning, Cooper produced a two-out double. Furuto stepped in and blasted a home run to right center field to give UM a 2-0 lead.

DSU (28-8) pushed across five runs in the third, three via a three-run home run by Devin Goodwin.  After UM picked up a run in the fifth inning (RBI single by B.J .Holloway) to trim the deficit to 5-3, Goodwin hit a second three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

UM answered in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Prokop and Brantly Clay produced back-to-back RBIs on fielders choices to make it a 8-5 game. In the seventh, Furuto delivered his third RBI of the night on an RBI single that trimmed the deficit to 8-6.

DSU scored a run in the eighth, while UM closed out the scoring with a run in the ninth on an RBI groundout by Cooper.

MONTEVALLO SWEEPS UAH IN GSC DOUBLEHEADER
 

DECATUR (4/6) – Zac Blakney and Jeffrey Reach earned victories on the mound for UM, as the Falcons completed a doubleheader sweep over the University of Alabama-Huntsville, 6-3 and 5-0, in action in Decatur on Sunday.

The three-game series between UM and UAH was contested at Calhoun Community College.

In game one, Blakney went the first 8 1/3 innings, striking out 10. He allowed one earned run and five hits with four walks to earn his sixth victory of the season. Zach Andrews went the final 2/3 of an inning to earn his fifth save.

UM collected 10 hits, three by B.J. Holloway.

The Falcons scored a run in the first. Jeremy Jones tripled to right center and scored on a wild pitch. In the third, UM added two runs (RBI single Daniel Furuto, RBI double Aaron Faust), and single runs in the fourth (RBI single Holloway), sixth (RBI single Cooper) and seventh innings (scoring fly ball Holloway) for a 6-0 lead. UAH scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and one run in the ninth.

In game two, Reach went the first six innings, did not allow a run, scattered four hits and struck out four batters for his fifth victory of the season. Nate Russ pitched a scoreless seventh inning. The Falcons picked up seven hits in game two, with Jones and Cooper collecting two hits each.

Ryan Norman started the third inning with a base hit. Holloway dropped a bunt down the third base line, however UAH committed a throwing error, allowing Norman to score from first base. Holloway later scored via a scoring fly ball by Moore for a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning with runners at first and third, Furuto broke toward second base. On the throw, Cooper broke for home. Cooper was involved in a rundown, but managed to elude the UAH defense and beat a relay throw home. Furuto later scored on an RBI groundout  by Faust for a 4-0 lead.

Norman scored another unearned run in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

MONTEVALLO DEFEATS UAH IN GSC GAME
 

DECATUR (4/5) -- A base hit by Eric Moore in the top of the eighth inning broke a 5-5 tie, as the University of Montevallo eventually posted an 8-5 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville in a Gulf South Conference baseball game in Decatur on Saturday.

The game was played at Calhoun Community College in Decatur.

UM collected 10 hits, two each by Moore, Chris Cooper and B.J. Holloway. Cooper added a 2-RBI single in the eighth inning to close out the scoring.

Brandon Aldridge started for UM, and went the first five innings. Garett Mims went the next two innings, allowed two hits and struck out two to earn his second victory of the season. Zach Andrews went the final two innings and earned his fourth save of the season.

Trailing 2-0, UM scored a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Brantly Clay. UM added three runs in the third on an RBI groundout by Jeremy Jones, a bases loaded walk to Aaron Faust and an unearned run scored by Cooper for a 4-2 UM lead.

After UAH scored a run, UM added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Jones for a 5-3 lead. UAH tied the game in the sixth inning.

In the eighth, Holloway reached on a fielders choice, moved to second on an error and scored on Moore's base hit. Jones walked to put runners on first and second. Moore then swiped his 31st stolen base of the season (third) with Jones moving up to second on the play. Cooper then delivered the 2-RBI single to close out the scoring.

UM (6-4 GSC, 23-17) and UAH (0-7 GSC, 14-25) were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, however weather concerns turned Saturday into a single 9-inning game. The teams are scheduled to complete the three-game weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday at noon. No. 30 BELLARMINE DEFEATS MONTEVALLO IN NON-CONFERENCE GAME
 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (4/2) -- The Falcons were held to two base hits, as they dropped a 10-0 decision to No. 30 Bellarmine University, in a non-conference baseball game played in Louisville, Ky. on Wednesday.

BU (18-9) scored six runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning. Daniel Hicks started for UM, and took the loss on the mound. Brett Dunn, Jason Sheehan and Jason Ellis also threw for UM, with Sheehan allowing no earned runs and five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Joe Prokop collected a base hit in the third inning, while Jeremy Jones had a base hit in the seventh inning.

UM (22-17) will play the University of Alabama-Huntsville for a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at noon. The games are scheduled to be played at Calhoun Community College in Decatur. FALCONS EARN A WIN AND A FRACTION --
MONTEVALLO WINS TWO OF THREE FROM LIONS
 

MONTEVALLO (3/30) -- The Falcons earned two key Gulf South Conference victories over the University of North Alabama on Sunday. UM completed the halted game from Saturday night, posting a 4-3 victory. The Falcons then recorded a 6-1 victory in the third and final game of the series, enabling the Falcons to earn a series victory over the Lions.

UM began the day in the bottom of the fourth inning of the halted game and quickly ended the inning. Zach Andrews stepped in and completed the game on the mound, going the final three innings and allowing just two hits with two strikeouts for his third save of the season. Zac Blakney who went the first four innings on Saturday, earned his fifth victory of the season.

After a break, the teams returned to complete the three-game weekend series.

After falling behind 1-0, UM tied the game in the third inning. Eric Moore tripled into the left field corner and scored on an RBI groundout by Jeremy Jones.  In the fifth inning, Jones produced an scoring fly ball, allowing Ryan Norman to score the go-ahead run. The score held until the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Daniel Furuto hit a triple that sailed over the outfielder's head into left center field to clear the bases. Furuto then scored on an RBI single by Chris Cooper.

Jeffrey Reach started for UM, went the first 5 1/3 innings, allowed one run and scattered eight hits, while striking out five batters for his fourth victory of the season. Garett Mims went the final 3 2/3 innings, struck out four, including the last two batters to earn a save.

UM had 12 hits in the final game of the series, three by Moore.

RAIN HALTS SECOND GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER BETWEEN FALCONS AND LIONS -- SERIES CONCLUDES SUNDAY
 

MONTEVALLO (3/29) -- After dropping the first game, 7-4, to the University of North Alabama, the University of Montevallo held a 4-3 lead in the second game of a GSC doubleheader on Saturday when the rains came.

The teams will conclude the halted second game Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The teams are then scheduled to conclude the three-game series on Sunday, 30 minutes after the conclusion of the halted game.

In game two, UM trailed 2-0 in the first inning. The Falcons put four runs across in the bottom of the first on one swing of the bat. Chris Cooper hit his sixth home run of the season (a grand slam) to give UM a 4-2 lead. UNA answered with a run in the top of the second inning.

After a scoreless third inning and top of the fourth, the Falcons began the bottom of the fourth inning.  With two outs, Eric Moore reached on a fielders choice and  moved to second on a walk to Jeremy Jones. When play resumes on Sunday, Moore will stand at second and Jones on first, with two outs, and Brantly Clay scheduled to hit.

Zac Blakney started for UM, and went four innings, striking out two.

In game one, UM collected 10 hits, four by Jones. Brandon Aldridge went the first 4 1/3 innings, while Nate Russ went the final 4 2/3 innings. Each struck out three batters. Russ took the loss on the mound.

UNA scored single runs in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the third inning, Clay hit a two-run home run, his fifth of the season to tie the game. UNA scored single runs again in the fourth and fifth innings for a 4-2 lead. In the sixth, pinch-hitter Brett Hall delivered an RBI double, while Ryan Norman had an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.  UNA scored a go-ahead run in the seventh and closed out the scoring with two in the ninth.

UM will enter Sunday's action with a record of 3-4 in the GSC, 20-16 overall, while UNA will begin Sunday with a record of 4-3 in the GSC and 19-11 overall. TUSCULUM DEFEATS MONTEVALLO FOR SERIES SWEEP
 

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (3/26) -- The Falcons came back from a four run deficit, however ended up losing to Tusculum College, 7-5, in a non-conference baseball game in Greeneville, Tenn. on Wednesday.

Trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning, UM tied the game, scoring four runs. Eric Moore began the inning with a base hit and promptly stole second and third. B.J. Holloway delivered an RBI single to get the Falcons on the board. Chris Cooper then had an RBI single. Later in the inning, Chris Wiley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brantly Clay was hit by a pitch to force in one run, while Jeremy Jones walked to force in the fourth run of the inning.

After the Pioneers (23-10) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 lead, UM tied the game when Cooper hit his second triple of the game and later scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the eighth, Maikol Gonzalez delivered a two-RBI single for the game-winning hit.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (3/25) -- The University of Montevallo dropped a 9-2 decision to Tusculum College, in a non-conference baseball game in Greeneville, Tenn. on Tuesday.

The Falcons were held to five base hits, and scored single runs in the sixth (scoring fly ball by Chris Cooper) and ninth (bases loaded walk). 

Stephen Taylor went the first 3 1/3 innings, and took the loss. Jason Ellis went 4 2/3 innings in relief, did not allow an earned run, and struck out four.

The Pioneers (22-10) scored three runs in the first, three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 9-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, back-to-back singles by Daniel Furuto and Dustin Rhodes placed runners on the corners. A walk to Jeffrey Reach loaded the bases. Cooper delivered a scoring fly ball to get the Falcons on the scoreboard.

In the ninth, the Falcons loaded the bases again. Furuto collected an RBI on a bases loaded walk to close out the scoring.

FURUTO TIES RECORD WITH THREE HOME RUNS
No. 2 TIGERS OUTLAST FALCONS IN SERIES FINALE
 

LIVINGSTON (3/22) -- The Falcons nearly rallied from an eight-run deficit, however came up short as they were defeated by No. 2 University of West Alabama, 14-13, in a Gulf South Conference game in Livingston on Saturday.

UM managed to collect 18 base hits, four each by Daniel Furuto and Eric Moore. On the day, Furuto batted 4-for-6, scored four runs and drove in five runs. He also hit a school record-tying three home runs.  The Birmingham native becomes the third Falcon all-time to hit three home runs in a game. Mark Hearn hit three home runs against Freed-Hardeman in 1982, while Steve Smitherman hit three home runs against UAB in 1983. The three home runs are the most by one player since the Falcons joined the NCAA in 1996. Moore also scored four runs and stole two bases, to give him 26 for the season.

Garett Mims pitched six innings in relief, striking out 13 batters, to come within one strikeout of tying the all-time single game record of 14 strikeouts, established by Ronnie Rasp against Birmingham-Southern in 1998. Jeffrey Reach started for UM and took the loss. Zach Andrews pitched the final inning.

The Falcons scored three in the first inning on an RBI single by B.J. Holloway and a 2-RBI single by Chris Cooper. UWA responded with six runs in the bottom of the first. Holloway had an RBI single in the second inning to trim the deficit to 6-4, however UWA scored one in the second and four in the fourth for a 12-4 lead. UM scored two in the sixth (2-run RBI by Ja'cote Ward), two in the seventh (Furuto home run and RBI single Ryan Norman) and three in the eighth (2 run home run, Furuto and unearned run) to make it a 12-11 game.

UWA scored two in the bottom of the seventh. Furuto hit his third home run of the game (two run home run) in the top of the eighth to close out the scoring.

A total of nine home runs were hit between the two teams.

MONTEVALLO EARNS GSC DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

LIVINGSTON (3/21) -- The Falcons pushed across the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, to earn a Gulf South Conference doubleheader split with No. 2 University of West Alabama in action in Livingston on Friday.

UM managed to post a 2-1 victory in game two, after dropping a 12-2 decision to UWA in game one.

Game one, the nine-inning game went seven innings on the 10-run rule. Game two, the seven-inning game went 10 innings.

Zach Andrews went the final 1 1/3 innings and struck out two batters including the final batter looking to earn his fifth victory of the season. Zac Blakney pitched a strong 5 1/3 innings to start, allowing one earned run and three hits with eight strikeouts. Nate Russ went the next 3 1/3 innings, not allowing a run and collecting two strikeouts.

In the 10th, B.J. Holloway reached with his second base hit of the game. Daniel Furuto stepped in, delivered a base hit to right field, and advanced to third base on a fielding error by UWA. On the play, Holloway scored all the way from first to plate the go-ahead run.

UM had nine hits in game two.

In game one, UWA pushed across five runs in the first and three runs in the third inning. UWA then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. UM scored two runs in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Aaron Faust.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (3/18) – No. 13 Columbus State University scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the University of Montevallo 11-8, in a non-conference baseball game in Columbus, Ga. on Tuesday.

UM collected 10 hits on the day. Daniel Furuto went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, two via a two-run home run (his fifth of the season) in the sixth inning.

Two-out hitting, a key to the Falcon offense last season reappeared on Tuesday, as the Falcons scored seven of the Falcons eight runs with two outs.  

Garett Mims went the final 2 2/3 innings and took the loss on the mound.

Furuto had an RBI double to give UM a 1-0 lead in the third. After CSU (21-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the third, UM answered with two runs in the fourth (RBI double by  Brantly Clay, RBI single by Jeremy Jones) and two runs in the fifth (RBI single by Dustin Rhodes, scoring fly ball by Joe Prokop) for a 5-2 lead.

After CSU scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, UM pushed across three runs in the sixth for an 8-3 lead. CSU scored three in the sixth, one in the seventh and four in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Ryan Norman added an insurance run, scoring via a scoring fly ball by Eric Moore, who collected five RBI on the day. Moore also hit a grand slam home run (third home run of season) as part of a five-run fourth inning.

UM collected 10 hits, two each by Eric Moore, Brantly Clay and Dustin Rhodes. Moore and Clay also drove in three runs each. Zac Blakney went five innings, allowed three earned runs, struck out three and picked up his fourth victory of the season. Zach Andrews went the final two innings and recorded the final two outs via strikeout.

Trailing 1-0, UM tied the game on an RBI groundout by B.J. Holloway. UM scored six runs in the second inning to take a 7-1 lead. UWF scored a run in the fourth and two in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 7-4. UM scored four in the bottom of the fifth, however UWF scored five runs in the top of the sixth. Moore blasted a solo home run (his second) in the bottom of the sixth and UWF scored two in the top of thee seventh.

In game one, Kyle Ramsey tossed a complete game as UWF managed a 14-1 victory over UM. The game was called after seven innings on the 10-run rule. The Falcons were held to four hits in game one. MONTEVALLO (3/12) -- Ja'Cote Ward produced an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, to allow the University of Montevallo to earn a split with Bellarmine University, in non-conference baseball action at Johnson Field on Wednesday.

UM recorded a 7-6 victory in game two, after dropping the first game of the doubleheader to the Knights, 10-2.

UM had seven hits in game two, with two each by Jeremy Jones and Nelson Garcia Jr.

Zach Andrews earned the game two victory in relief, pitching the final two innings and collecting a pair of strikeouts. Andrews missed on a save opportunity, as he gave up the game-tying runs in the top of the sixth inning. Stephen Taylor went the first five innings, allowed one earned runs, two hits and three walks, while striking out four.

After BU scored a run in the first, UM tied the game in the first inning (RBI groundout by Brantly Clay) and went ahead 3-1, with two runs in the bottom of the second inning (RBI triple by Garcia Jr. and RBI groundout by Brett Hall).

BU scored three in the top of the fifth, however UM scored three of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning (RBI single by Jones, RBI groundouts by Clay and Chase Fowler). for a 6-4 lead.

BC tied the game with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, with one out Aaron Faust singled to center and stole second. After a second out, Ward hit a ball just past the reach of the Knights first baseman into right field.

In game one, the Knights had 17 base hits. BU scored single runs in the first, second and third innings. UM countered with a run in the second (RBI single by Jones). BU added two in the fourth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh. UM closed out the scoring with one run in the bottom of the seventh (RBI single by Ward).

UM had six hits in game one, two by Dustin Rhodes.

TUSCULUM DEFEATS MONTEVALLO
 

MONTEVALLO (3/11) -- The University of Montevallo baseball team was defeated by Tusculum College, 12-3, in a non-conference game at Johnson Field on Tuesday.

The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak.

UM managed nine hits, two by Chris Cooper.

Garett Mims took the loss on the mound. Nate Russ and Heath Wilson also threw for UM, with Wilson completing five innings of work.

The visiting Pioneers scored one run in the first inning and broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning.  UM scored a run in the fourth inning (RBI double by Dustin Rhodes), however Tusculum pushed across three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. UM scored two runs in the ninth (RBI groundout by B.J. Holloway, RBI single by Daniel Furuto) to close out the scoring.

UM (16-8) will host Bellarmine University for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. The games are also scheduled to be broadcast on UM Internet Radio. You will need to have the QuickTime Player, in order to listen to the broadcast.

WIN STREAK AT NINE GAMES -- FALCONS SWEEP CHRISTIAN BROTHERS IN DOUBLEHEADER
 

MONTEVALLO (3/9) -- The Falcons completed a three-game series sweep, earning two victories over Christian Brothers University, in non-conference baseball action at Johnson Field on Sunday.

UM posted an 8-5 victory in game one, before recording a 5-1 victory in game two.

In game one, UM collected 10 hits,  two each by B.J. Holloway, Chris Cooper and Brantly Clay. Zac Blakney started for UM, went the first six innings, and struck out seven, while allowing three earned runs and two walks to earn his third victory of the season. Zach Andrews pitched the seventh inning.

UM scored three runs in the second via a 3-RBI bases-clearing double by Clay. CBU scored two runs in the top of the third, however, UM responded with five runs in the bottom of the third (RBI singles by Jeffrey Reach, Ryan Norman and Clay, 2-RBI single Eric Moore) to make it an 8-2 game. CBU scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

In game two, Jeffrey Reach pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run and three hits, while striking out six for his third victory of the season. Nate Russ pitched the seventh inning, and struck out two batters. UM had five base hits.

Moore scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 UM lead in the first inning. CBU tied the game in the top of the second, however UM pushed across three runs in the bottom of the second inning (scoring fly ball by Moore, RBI singles by Holloway and Daniel Furuto). Chase Fowler hit a solo home run (his second of the season) in the fifth inning to close out the scoring.

The Falcons have now won nine consecutive games.

UM (16-7) will host Tusculum College for a non-conference game Tuesday night. The game is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m., however may be pushed back to a later starting time on Tuesday. MONTEVALLO DEFEATS CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
 

MONTEVALLO (3/8) -- The University of Montevallo scored three runs in the first inning, en route to a 17-2 victory over Christian Brothers University, in a non-conference baseball game at Johnson Field on Saturday.

UM collected 15 hits, three by B.J. Holloway. Brandon Aldridge went the first 5 1/3 innings, allowed two runs with a walk, while striking out two to earn his third victory of the season. Heath Wilson, Stephen Taylor and Zach Andrews also threw for UM.

UM collected three unearned runs in the first. CBU scored a run in the top of the second. Clay hit his fourth home run of the season in the second inning for a 4-1 lead.  Jeffrey Reach added an RBI single in the third inning for a 5-1 lead. The Falcons broke the game open with five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to make it a 12-1 game.

After CBU scored a run in the top of the sixth, UM answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

GAME TIME CHANGES FOR WEEKEND BASEBALL GAMES WITH CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
 

MONTEVALLO (3/7) -- Changes have been made to the baseball schedule for this weekend. UM and Christian Brothers University were originally scheduled to play a three-game series, with a doubleheader on Saturday.

The teams will now play one nine-inning game Saturday at 1 p.m. The series is scheduled to be concluded Sunday morning with a doubleheadher (two seven-inning games), beginning at 12 p.m.

MONTEVALLO SWEEPS ALABAMA A & M UNIVERSITY IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER
 

MONTEVALLO (3/5) -- The Falcons swept a non-conference doubleheader over Alabama A & M University, in action at Johnson Field on Wednesday.

UM won game one 12-2, before posting a 7-2 victory in game two.

In game one, UM collected 10 hits, two by Ryan Norman. Chris Cooper drove in three runs, while Eric Moore scored three runs.

Garett Mims allowed two runs and struck out nine in four innings to earn his first victory of the season. Zach Andrews went the final three innings, struck out three and earned his second save of the season.

The Falcons scored single runs in the first and second innings and broke the game open with four runs in the third and six runs in the fourth. AAMU closed out the scoring with two runs in the fifth.

In the second game, UM had six hits, two by Joe Prokop. Dustin Rhodes drove in three runs.

Daniel Hicks went the first five innings, and struck out six. Nate Russ went the final two innings and collected three strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.

AAMU scored a run in the first. The Falcons answered with three runs in the third and a run in the fourth inning, before AAMU scored a run in the fifth to make it a 4-2 game. UM closed out the scoring with three runs in the sixth inning.

UM (13-7) will host Christian Brothers University for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

MONTEVALLO COMPLETES SERIES SWEEP OF ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
 

MONTEVALLO (3/2) -- The Falcons completed a three-game series sweep of the University of Arkansas-Monticello on Sunday, posting a 13-3 victory over the Boll Weevils, in non-conference action at Johnson Field.

The game was called in the 7th inning on the 10-run rule.

UM collected 13 hits in the game, three each by Chase Fowler and Aaron Faust. Fowler also scored three runs, while Faust collected four RBI.

Jeffrey Reach went the first six innings on the mound for UM, allowing one run and six hits, while walking one and striking out three batters as he earned his second victory of the season. Stephen Taylor and Corey Turnbloom also threw for UM.

Daniel Furuto hit a solo home run (third of season) to get the scoring started for UM in the first inning. UM broke the game open with five runs in the second and two in the third. UAM scored a run in the fourth inning to make it an 8-1 game. UM scored four in the fifth, (including a solo home run by Fowler) and a run in the sixth. UAM scored one in the seventh to close out the scoring.

UM (11-7) will host Alabama A&M University for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.    

MONTEVALLO SWEEPS ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
 

MONTEVALLO (3/1) -- The University of Montevallo baseball team pounded out 46 base hits in a doubleheader sweep over the University of Arkansas-Monticello, in non-conference action at Johnson Field on Saturday.

UM posted a 26-1 victory in game one, before recording an 18-1 victory in game two.

The Falcons nearly tied a school single-game record for base hits in game one. UM collected 28 hits, four by Jeremy Jones, and three each by B.J. Holloway, Chris Cooper, Brett Hall and Dustin Rhodes. Brantly Clay collected eight RBI, four on a grand slam home run in the third inning.

Brandon Aldridge went the first six innings and allowed five base hits while striking out four to earn his second victory of the season. Jeffrey Alexander, Jason Ellis and Brett Dunn each pitched one inning in relief.

UM scored in every inning except the second inning. UM scored seven in the first, six in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, four in the seventh and three in the eighth.

In game two, Zac Blakney went the distance, did not allow an earned run and struck out a personal-best 11 batters.

UM collected 18 base hits in game two, three each by Dustin Rhodes and Eric Moore. Rhodes drove in six runs, four on a grand slam home run in the fifth inning.

UM scored three in the first and second innings, before scoring six runs in the third. Two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth closed out the scoring.

UM (10-7) will host the University of Arkansas-Monticello for a non-conference game and final game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.   
 

REACH HITS WALK-OFF HOME RUN
MONTEVALLO DEFEATS MISSOURI WESTERN STATE
 

MONTEVALLO (2/28) -- Jeffrey Reach hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, to lift the University of Montevallo to a 6-5 victory over Missouri Western State University, in a non-conference baseball game at Johnson Field on Thursday.

Reach sent a pitch high over the left field fence for his first home run of the season. Zach Andrews earned his second victory of the season in relief.

UM led 4-0, with three runs in the first and a run in the second. In the first inning, Daniel Furuto hit a two-run home run, while Chris Cooper immediately followed with a solo home run for a 3-0 lead. In the second, Holloway produced an RBI single to give UM a 4-0 lead.

MWSU scored two in the third, a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the sixth, UM took a 5-4 lead when Holloway walked with the bases loaded. MWSU scored a run in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5.

UM collected 10 hits, two each by Holloway and Jeremy Jones.

Garett Mims started for UM and went the first 5 1/3 innings. Jeff Alexander, Jason Ellis and Heath Wilson all followed.

UM (8-7) will host the University of Arkansas-Monticello for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.  

MONTEVALLO SPLITS NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER WITH MISSOURI WESTERN STATE
 

MONTEVALLO (2/27) -- The University of Montevallo pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 10-9 game one victory over Missouri Western State University, in non-conference baseball action at Johnson Field on Wednesday.

UM collected 11 hits in game one, two each by Eric Moore, B.J. Holloway, Aaron Faust and Dustin Rhodes. Holloway also drove in four runs, including the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.

Nate Russ went the final 2/3 inning and earned his first victory of the season. Heath Wilson started for UM and went the first 2/1/3 innings. Stephen Taylor went the next two innings, while Zach Andrews followed for three innings of work.

UM trailed 7-3 after four innings. MWSU scored a run in the top of the fifth, UM answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth (RBI double by Faust, RBI single by Brett Hall and two-RBI double by Holloway) to take a 9-8 lead.  MWSU tied the game with a run in the sixth.

In game two, MWSU scored three runs (two unearned) in the seventh inning to post a 5-3 victory over UM. With the game tied at 2-2, Chris Cooper hit a solo home run, his third of the season, in the bottom of the sixth inning to give UM a 3-2 lead.

Daniel Hicks started for UM and went the first 4 2/3 innings. Russ went the final 2 1/3 innings and took the loss.

UM (7-7) and MWSU are scheduled to complete the three-game series Thursday afternoon at noon. 

FALCONS MAKE ADDITION TO 2008 SCHEDULE
 

MONTEVALLO (2/26) -- The University of Montevallo has made an addition to the 2008 schedule.

UM will now host Missouri Western State University for a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m. The three-game series concludes Thursday at noon.
 

No. 13 SOUTHERN ARKANSAS DEFEATS No. 23 MONTEVALLO IN EXTRA INNINGS
 

MAGNOLIA, Ark. (2/23) -- No. 23 University of Montevallo was defeated by No. 13 Southern Arkansas University, 6-5 (11 innings), in a non-conference baseball game in Magnolia, Ark. Sunday afternoon.

UM held one run leads of 4-3 and 5-4. SAU tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, and hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning.

The Falcons collected 11 hits on Sunday, two each by Eric Moore, B.J. Holloway, Daniel Furuto and Aaron Faust.

Brandon Aldridge started for UM and went 3 2/3 innings. Heath Wilson went the next two innings, and did not allow a run. Garett Mims followed and allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings. Zach Andrews went the final three innings and took the loss.

Trailing 3-0, UM pushed across three runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Moore, an RBI double by Holloway and an RBI groundout by Furuto. UM took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning via a scoring fly ball by Brantly Clay. After SAU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, Holloway produced a RBI single in the eighth inning for a 5-4 UM lead.

UM (6-6) will return to action on Saturday, March 1, as they host the University of Arkansas-Monticello for a non-conference doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m.

No. 23 MONTEVALLO SWEPT BY No. 13 SOUTHERN ARKANSAS IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER
 

MAGNOLIA, Ark. (2/23) -- The No. 23 University of Montevallo was swept by No. 13 Southern Arkansas University, in non-conference baseball action in Magnolia, Ark. Saturday afternoon.

UM dropped game one 12-2, then lost to SAU, 8-2 in game two.

In game one, UM collected 10 hits, three each by Eric Moore and Jeremy Jones. Zac Blakney started for UM, and took the loss on the mound. Blakney went six innings, while Jeffrey Alexander went two innings in relief.

SAU scored four runs in the first,  three in the second and two in the fourth for a 9-0 lead. UM pushed acros their two runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Jones and a scoring fly ball by Ryan Norman. SAU scored a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to close out the scoring.

In game two, UM collected just two base hits.  Jeffrey Reach went the first two innings for UM, while Nate Russ went four innings. UM trailed 6-0 when they scored an unearned run in the third inning. SAU picked up single runs in the third and sixth innings

The Falcons closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh via an RBI double by B.J. Holloway.

UM (6-5) and SAU will conclude the three-game weekend series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

No. 23 MONTEVALLO FALLS TO No. 8 GEORGIA COLLEGE AND STATE IN NON-CONFERENCE GAME
 

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (2/19) -- The No. 23 Falcon baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 8 Georgia College and State University, in a non-conference baseball game in Milledgeville, Ga. Tuesday afternoon.

UM was held to three base hits. GCSU managed to collect five base hits.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out,  B.J. Holloway was hit by a pitch. He moved up to second base on a wild pitch, then to third base via a balk. Daniel Furuto stepped in, and delivered an RBI single.

GCSU collected single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Brandon Aldridge started on the mound for the Falcons, allowing one earned run, while striking out three and walking three. Heath Wilson and Nate Russ also threw for UM.
 
UM (6-3) will travel to Southern Arkansas University for a weekend three-game series this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon. The series concludes Sunday at noon.

FINAL GAME OF SERIES BETWEEN No. 18 MONTEVALLO AND  DRURY CANCELLED
 

MONTEVALLO (2/17) -- The final game of the three-game series between No. 18 University of Montevallo and Drury University scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled due to weather.

The game will not be rescheduled.

UM (6-2) will travel to Georgia College and State University for a non-conference game Tuesday at 3 p.m. (ET).
 

No. 18 MONTEVALLO SPLITS WITH DRURY UNIVERSITY IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER
 

MONTEVALLO (2/16) -- No. 18 University of Montevallo earned a split of a non-conference doubleheader against Drury University, in action at Johnson Field on Saturday.

In game one, Ryan Norman produced an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Jeremy Jones with the winning run in a 5-4 victory. By mutual agreement, the teams completed a seven-inning game first, with a nine-inning game scheduled for game two.

Drury posted a 4-2 victory in game two.

UM collected just five hits in game one, but two were instrumental in a comeback from a three-run deficit. Trailing 4-1 in the sixth inning, Chris Cooper hit his second home run of the season, a three-run home run to tie the game at 4-4. In the seventh, Jones reached on an error and took second on the throw. With the infield drawn in, Norman smacked the game-winning RBI to right field.

Zach Andrews struck out four, including three consecutive batters in the sixth to earn his first victory of the season. Zac Blakney started for UM went five innings, and allowed one earned run with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Nate Russ started the sixth and after a couple of batters, Andrews came in and struck out three batters.

In game two, UM had six hits, two each by Eric Moore and B.J. Holloway. Jeffrey Reach started for UM and went the first four innings. Garett Mims pitched the next four, with Russ pitching the ninth.

UM trailed again 4-1, this time in the eighth inning, but could only push across one run.

UM (6-2) and Drury will conclude the three-game series Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m.
 

No. 18 MONTEVALLO FALLS TO No. 17 COLUMBUS STATE IN RAIN SHORTENED GAME
 

MONTEVALLO (2/12) -- No. 18 University of Montevallo dropped a 9-2 decision to No. 17 Columbus State University, in a rain-shortened non-conference game at Johnson Field on Tuesday.

The game was halted in the bottom of the eighth inning due to weather.

UM collected seven hits on the day. Eric Moore and Daniel Furuto collected two hits each. Zac Blakney started for UM and tossed three scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out five. Garett Mims went one inning and took the loss on the mound. Jeffrey Reach went the next 2 1/3 innings, while Nate Russ went 1 2/3 innings.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Ja'cote Ward led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. He stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Norman. Ward then scored on a wild pitch.

In the fourth CSU scored three runs and added two more in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Moore collected an RBI single to make it a 5-2 game.

CSU closed out the scoring with four runs in the sixth inning.

UM (5-1) will host Drury University for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

MONTEVALLO AT No. 7 IN LATEST PING! BASEBALL POLL
 

MONTEVALLO (2/11) -- The University of Montevallo baseball team moves up five spots and is at No. 7 in the latest Ping! Baseball poll, it has been announced.

Tampa is at No. 1. Mount Olive is No. 2. Ouachita Baptist is No. 3. Tusculum is No. 4. Franklin Pierce is No. 5. Delta State is No. 6. After UM, Cal State Chico, Armstrong Atlantic and Grand Valley State round out the Top 10 in this poll.

Other GSC schools in this poll in addition to UM, OBU and DSU are West Alabama (11) and Southern Arkansas (14).
 

Ping! Baseball began promoting college baseball in 2007. The organization will sponsor an All-Freshman Team, and All-Ping! Baseball Team at the conclusion of the season. Although not the official NCAA poll, this is the first season that Ping! Baseball is putting together a poll for NCAA Division II baseball. Primarily a sponsor of NCAA Division I baseball in its inaugural 2007 season, the program has expanded to actively promote collegiate baseball at the NCAA Division II and III levels.

MONTEVALLO AT No. 18 IN LATEST COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER NCAA DIVISION II POLL

The University of Tampa (6-0) remains at No. 1. Ouachita Baptist (6-0) and Mount Olive (6-1) are tied for No. 2. Cal State Chico (5-1) is No. 4. West Alabama (6-1) remains at No. 5. Tusculum is No. 6. Franklin Pierce and Grand Valley State are tied at No.7. Armstrong Atlantic State is No. 9 and Delta State along with Southern Arkansas are tied at No. 10.

Six GSC schools remain in this week's Top 30 poll. After UM, North Alabama is at No. 27.

TUSCALOOSA (2/10) – No. 15 University of Montevallo swept a doubleheader over Stillman College, in non-conference action in Tuscaloosa on Sunday.

UM posted an 18-6 victory in game one. UM collected 18 hits, four by Eric Moore and three each by Ryan Norman and Daniel Furuto. Stephen Taylor started on the mound and went 2 1/3 innings. Heath Wilson pitched the next three innings and was credited with his second victory of the season. Brett Dunn went the final 1 2/3 innings, did not allow a run and struck out two batters.

The Falcons scored three runs in the first, before Stillman tied the game with two runs in the first and a run in the second. After taking a 4-3 lead in the third, UM broke the game open in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two SC errors and pushing across seven unearned runs. UM later led 12-6 and closed out the scoring with six runs in the sixth inning. Furuto, along with Brantly Clay  and Dustin Rhodes hit home runs.

In game two, Brandon Aldridge went six innings, allowed one run and five hits and struck out three, as the Falcons earned a 10-1 game two victory. The game was called at the end of the sixth inning due to darkness. UM collected ten hits, two each by Chris Cooper and Brett Hall. Cooper also drove in four RBI, three via a home run as part of a five-run fourth inning.

No. 15 UM (5-0) will host Columbus State University for a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

MONTEVALLO MOVES UP TO No. 15 IN LATEST COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER NCAA DIVISION II PRE-SEASON POLL
 

MONTEVALLO (2/6) -- The University of Montevallo has moved up one spot to No. 15 in the latest  Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II poll it has been announced.

Defending national champion University of Tampa (2-0) remains at No. 1. Mesa State (3-1) moves up two spots to No. 2 and GSC West member Ouachita Baptist (3-0) moves up nine spots to No. 3. Mount Olive (2-1) is No. 4 and GSC East member West Alabama (3-0), not ranked in the pre-season poll, moves up to No. 5. Southern Indiana is No. 6,  Delta State, from the GSC West is tied with Cal State Los Angeles at No. 7 . Franklin Pierce and Grand Valley State round out the Top 10.

With three GSC schools in the Top 10, UM at No. 15, West Florida at No. 29, and Southern Arkansas receiving votes, six GSC schools are in the week's Top 30 poll.

AMERICUS, Ga. (2/3) -- Four Falcons combined for a four-hit shutout as No. 16 University of Montevallo posted a 3-0 victory at Georgia Southwestern State University, in a non-conference game in Americus, Ga. on Sunday.

Stephen Taylor went the first 3 1/3 innings, allowed two hits and walked three with one strikeout. Heath Wilson went the next three innings, did not allow a hit and struck out one batter and was credited with the victory. Garett Mims went the next 1 1/3 inning, allowed two hits and struck out two. Zach Andrews completed the game, striking out one.

UM collected seven hits, two each by B.J. Holloway and Jeremy Jones. Holloway had two RBI while Jones hit his first home run of the season for the game-winning RBI.

UM (3-0) travels to Stillman College for a non-conference doubleheader (two seven-inning games) Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

No. 16 MONTEVALLO SWEEPS GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN TO OPEN 2008 SEASON
 

AMERICUS, Ga. (2/2) -- The No. 16 University of Montevallo baseball team swept Georgia Southwestern State University, 15-8 and 4-1, in season-opening action at Americus, Ga. on Saturday.

In game one, Daniel Furuto went 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Brantly Clay went 2-for-5, scored three runs, and collected five RBI. Eric Moore also went 3-for-5 and was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Zac Blakney earned the game one victory on the mound.

In game two, Jeffrey Reach went 4 2/3 innings and struck out seven to earn the victory. Nate Russ went the final 1 1/3 in relief to earn the save. Furuto collected three hits in game two, driving in two runs.

UM (2-0) and GSW will conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET).


No. 16 MONTEVALLO PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN GSC PRE-SEASON COACHES POLL
 FOUR FALCONS NAMED TO PRE-SEASON ALL-GSC TEAM
 

MONTEVALLO (1/29) -- The No. 16 University of Montevallo Falcons were picked to finish third, it has been announced by the conference office in their baseball pre-season release.

UM was one of six GSC schools to receive one championship vote to win the Gulf South Conference championship. UM along with Southern Arkansas and West Alabama recieved one vote. West Florida (2) and Ouachita Baptist (3) were voted ahead of UM. Delta State received seven championship votes, yet were picked to finish second in the GSC West behind OBU.

West Florida edged out West Alabama as pre-season favorite to win the GSC East. UM received one first place vote, three second place votes, one third and one fourth place vote. UWF earned 32 points (three first place votes) with UWA at 31 points (three first place votes) and UM at 28 points. North Alabama (28 points) was picked fourth with Valdosta State (18 points) picked to finish fifth. West Georgia (9 points) and Alabama-Huntsville (8 points) round out the division.

OBU (47 points) recieved five first place votes, while DSU (43 points) collected three first place votes.  Southern Arkansas (39 points) was picked third.

Four Falcons were named to the Pre-Season All-GSC Team. Senior outfielders Brantly Clay and Eric Moore, along with senior pitchers Garett Mims and Jeffrey Reach have been named.

No. 16 UM begins the 2007 season on the road at Georgia Southwestern State University for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. (ET).
