LADY FALCONS MAGICAL SEASON ENDS IN COLUMBUS, GA. -- No.
14 TAMPA DEFEATS MONTEVALLO IN SOUTH REGION CHAMPIONSHIP
MATCH
COLUMBUS, Ga.—The magical run for
Montevallo’s women soccer came to an
end Friday evening as Tampa won the
South Region Championship, defeating
the Lady Falcons, 2-0.
UM
earned the automatic bid from the
Gulf South Conference by winning the
GSC Tournament two weeks ago in
Pensacola, Fla. The sixth-seeded
Lady Falcons defeated No. 3 seed
West Florida and No. 2 seed Saint
Leo in last weekend’s opening rounds
of the NCAA Tournament.
Montevallo, appearing in its
first-ever NCAA Championships, fell
behind early as the Spartans leading
scorer Shelby Kuni scored her 13th
goal of the season on an assist from
Courtney Evans. Evans found Kuni in
the box and despite a Lady Falcon
defender getting a piece of the
ball, UT took a 1-0 lead, 13 minutes
into the contest.
The
Spartans struck again 12 minutes
later as a UT shot that appeared to
go out of bounds off a Spartan
player was called out on Montevallo,
setting up a corner kick for Tampa.
Evans placed a beautiful ball for
Ashley Flateland who headed in the
second goal of the match.
UM
keeper Corey Gros made two
one-on-one saves in the second half
that kept the Lady Falcons hopes
alive. The Spartans played very
aggressive, recording 20 fouls and
three yellow cards to Montevallo’s
two fouls and one caution. The one
card for UM was costly, however, as
a ball sent into the Tampa box was
played by Spartan net minder Shannon
Aitken and defender Nicole Murphy.
Aitken and Murphy collided and as
Lady Falcon forward Paula Radmard
collected the loose ball and turned
to shoot on an empty net, the
referee blew his whistle, stopping
play, and carded Radmard for
interfering with the goalkeeper in
the 76th minute.
UM
took 13 shots to Tampa’s 10, but the
two early goals were too much for
the Lady Falcons to overcome, ending
a magnificent run in the NCAA
Tournament. Kami Kapaku had six
shots to lead UM.
“It
was a fairy tale season for us,”
said UM head coach Patricia Hughes.
“We definitely exceeded expectations
and I’m so proud of these girls.
Even in the loss, they gave it
everything they had and made Tampa
work extremely hard for the win.”
The
Lady Falcons finished the best
season in school history and claimed
the first women’s NCAA Conference
Championship at Montevallo. Coach
Hughes will return 17 of 20 players
and nine of 11 starters next season.
UM concludes the 2007 season at 15-8
overall.

FRIDAY
SAINT LEO, Fla. (11/11) -- The
never-give up attitude of the University of Montevallo

the postseason. UM defeated Saint Leo University, 2-1 in

and shot the ball that deflected off the bottom of the
crossbar and found it's way to the back of the net to
tie the match with 1:34 remaining in the second half.
SLU had one last attempt to win the game in regulation.
A shot by Sara Macko sailed over the top of the crossbar
in the closing seconds.

up the offensive pressure in the second half and in both
overtime periods. UM outshot the Lions 12-2 in the
second half and 5-2 in the two overtime periods. UM had
20 shots in total, nine by Kapaku (four on goal), along
with five from Balaam (three on goal).
With time winding down in the second overtime period,
Kapaku broke through and was preparing to take a shot
when she was pulled down to set up a penalty kick
opportunity.
Balaam, perfect on penalty kicks (7-for-7) for the
season, knocked in the game-winner for the golden goal
in the 108th minute of play. The Suffolk, England
native, who earlier in the week was recognized as the
Daktronics South Region Player of the Year, remains
perfect (10-for-10) in her career. It is also her fourth
game-winning goal and 13th goal of the season.

board early in the first half.
Jennifer O'Connor headed in a loose ball
for her fourth goal of the season in the
seventh minute.

three saves. An active Lady Falcon defense responded to
the Argo pressure throughout the match, deflecting away
numerous potential Argo offensive attacks. Gros, along
with Adele Jackson and Jo-Anne McCarthy
helped lead the
defensive effort. Gros came out into the field of play on
numerous occasions to cutoff several potential scoring
opportunities. The team also blocked shots or headed
away crossing passes.
The one shot in the first half for UM was in the 13th minute of play.
Catherine Honey got to a loose ball in the center of
the field outside the 18-yard box and sent a shot towards the goal.
The ball bounced off the crossbar and back into play.
After a scoreless first half, Naila Owens had an
opportunity to get UWF on the scoreboard in the 51st
minute, however her shot attempt bounced off the
crossbar as well.
Less than two minutes later, Kami Kapaku sent a
crossing pass into the box. The pass was to Brittany
Correia, who sent the ball to Paula Radmard
very close to the UWF goal. Radmard tapped the ball
forward into the open net, past the UWF goalkeeper for
her 14th goal overall, and sixth game-winning goal of
the season.
UWF tried to respond quickly. Off a corner kick pass,
Dernell Mascall headed the ball towards the goal, but
sailed over the top of the crossbar. Later in the half,
a shot taken by Jodi Gallucci skidded along the ground
past Gros, however bounced off the post behind her and
over the goal line.

players and was tripped up en route to the goal.
Somehow, the Wailuku, Hawaii native

for her team-leading 16th goal of the season.

2007 SEASON PREVIEW
The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team of 2006
fielded one of the top three defensive squads in the
Gulf South Conference, earning six shutouts. Along the
way, Montevallo picked up three consecutive victories,
which included two victories in GSC play. The Lady
Falcons were in the post-season picture until the last
weekend, but came up short in their bid to make the
post-season, and concluded with a 6-9-1 record overall
with three of the losses coming in overtime (two in
double overtime)
After the fall season, the team members of the
University of Montevallo women’s soccer team worked very
hard, building strong team chemistry. They have been
rewarded for the hard work with positive results on the
field, first in the spring soccer season and again, this
fall in pre-season scrimmages. There is a renewed sense
of optimism for the Lady Falcons in 2007.
“We are definitely working much better as a group,”
Hughes said. “There is an unbelievable team bond and
everyone is finding ways to contribute on the field. I
have great expectations for this group of young ladies.”
A veteran defensive presence returns for 2007, including
a pair of four-year starters, and two that have received
post-season accolades.
Junior goalkeeper Corey Gros returns as the
primary goalkeeper and one of the leading goalkeepers in
the Gulf South Conference. The Victoria, British
Columbia native earned her second consecutive First Team
All-Gulf South Conference selection and was recognized
for her equal tenacity in the classroom, as she was
named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSida Academic
All-District and GSC All-Academic Teams. Gros posted a
successful 1.14 GAA, collected 85 saves to lead the GSC,
while earning six shutouts, giving her 10 for her
career. Freshman newcomer Bailey Robinson (5-7,
Birmingham) from Homewood High School will join the Lady
Falcons for 2007, but will red-shirt this season.
Junior Adele Jackson along with four-year seniors
Jo-Anne McCarthy and Julie Gurak anchor
the defense. Jackson was named to her second consecutive
NSCAA/adidas All-South Region team and First Team
All-Gulf South Conference. She was also recognized this
fall as she was named to the Pre-Season All-GSC team.
McCarthy, named to the Second Team All-Gulf South
Conference in 2006, will provide vocal leadership as a
central defender, while Gurak will be counted on to
continue her strong play on the outside. Also returning
on defense to push for a starting nod is senior Amber
Hooper, who started in 11 matches. Joining the mix
is talented freshman newcomer Kristin Rosato
(5-6, Pinson) who competed at Clay-Chalkville High
School.
In the midfield Stacey Balaam returns for her
third year as a central midfielder. Balaam was named to
her second consecutive All-Gulf South Conference team,
as she was named to the First Team All-GSC last season.
She led the Lady Falcons in scoring, scoring three goals
and adding six assists. Sophomores Lucrece Laverdure,
Brittany Correia and Angela Bounassisi are
three returnees who gained valuable experience last
season. All three scored goals against GSC opponents.
Laverdure scored three goals, including a game-winning
goal against Delta State. Correia scored a goal against
West Florida, while Bounassisi found the back of the net
against Ouachita Baptist. Moving into the midfield this
season is sophomore Erin Duncan, who earned playing time
as a reserve, appearing in seven matches. Alex Terhar
(5-7, Cincinnati, Ohio), along with Allison Walls
(5-4, Vestavia Hills), are two talented freshmen that
will push for playing time. The two have already left a
positive impression in pre-season match, each netting a
goal. Terhar was part of a team that won the 2006 Girls
Greater Cincinnati League championship at Ursuline
Academy. Walls is an Honorable Mention All-State and
Second Team All-Metro selection at nearby Vestavia Hills
High School, where the team claimed the Alabama 6A State
Championship this past season. She may also see time as
goalkeeper.
Two sophomores, Paula Radmard and Catherine
Honey return as forwards. Radmard started in 13
matches, led the Lady Falcons in goals scored with five
and netted three game-winning goals against Christian
Brothers, North Alabama and Georgia College and State.
Honey started in 13 matches, and scored the only goal of
the match against Florida Tech.
Two talented newcomers, junior Kami Kapaku (5-7,
Wailuku, Hi.) and freshman Natalie Martineau
(5-2, Oakville, Ontario) were late roster additions.
Kapaku was an NSCAA/adidas Junior College All-American
at Yuba College in California, while Martineau was on
the Under-20 and Under-17 Canadian National Teams the
past two years. Fellow freshman Erin Jollay (5-6,
Richardson, Tex.) will also compete as a forward. Jollay
was an All-District selection and Dallas Morning News
Player of the Week at Richardson High School. Two other
freshman newcomers Morgan Brooks (5-3,
Huntsville) and Emily Miller (5-5, Cullman) will
compete for playing time either as forwards or in the
midfield.
Although the overall 2007 schedule is balanced equally
between home and road matches, the Lady Falcons will
host a series of matches that will give them the best
opportunity to assist them in their post-season chances.
Montevallo will host Rollins and Florida for key
in-region matches in the first half of the schedule,
before opening Gulf South Conference play with three
consecutive home matches against Harding, Ouachita
Baptist and Christian Brothers.
UM anticipates an
exciting season with an even stronger squad that have
the tools necessary to obtain a berth in the Gulf South
Conference Tournament in November.
