The Department of Art awards first year tuition assistance in the form of the Dean's Fine Art, Joan Gregory, Madge Taylor Sims, CFA Gala, and the Jefferson County Alumni Association Scholarships. The number of scholarships awarded by the Department and the amount of the awards are determined yearly.
Application Requirements:
Students interested in competing for a scholarship must meet the following requirements:
*Be admitted to the University of Montevallo as an incoming
freshman or transfer student for Fall, 2009*Complete the scholarship application and mail to the Art Office separately from your portfolio
*Submit a portfolio on or before April 10, 2009
Portfolio Contents:
The portfolio should include the following:
*no fewer than 10 pieces of original art work
*at least 5 drawings, in any drawing medium, from life (not from photos, books, etc.)
*send only finished work, no studies or sketches
*mount and/or mat each work (white mats preferred)
*unfixed charcoal, pastels, etc. should be neatly covered with newsprint or acetate
*attach a clearly written label on the back of each piece of artwork including the following information:
*your name, title of work, date, and medium
*if the work was produced as a class project, briefly describe the project
*identify drawings from life
Portfolio Evaluation Criteria:
The Art Faculty evaluates each portfolio based on the following criteria:
*mastery of fundamental skills and concepts in drawing and design
*creativity and originality
*knowledge and mastery of the selected media
*professionalism in presentation
Application Deadline:
Applicants must deliver their portfolios to the Art Office (206 Bloch Hall) on the University of Montevallo campus on or before April 10, 2009. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Late portfolios will not be accepted.
Notification of awards is by letter, shortly after the deadline.
Applicants may pick up their portfolios the week of April 20- 24 and April 27 - May 1.
The Department will not assume responsibility for portfolios left beyond that time.
