Drawing is an important part of the Foundations program at the University of Montevallo. All art students take Drawing 1 and Drawing 2 in their freshman year, which are observational drawing classes designed to sharpen the perceptual skills of students while teaching them the fundamentals of drawing. In addition, B.F.A. students in every concentration are required to take one advanced level drawing course. There are five advanced drawing courses offered on a rotating basis, including Figure Drawing, Materials and Concepts, Series, Color Illustration, and Black and White drawing. Occasionally special topics drawing classes may be taught depending on interest, for example Large Format Drawing. Students wishing to complete a concentration in drawing will take all five of these advanced drawing courses and finish the program with a Portfolio class in which they work independently on a large body of work, usually for their senior exhibition. Drawing classes are taught in both Bloch and Peterson Hall. The recently renovated space in Peterson Hall features natural light from large windows, two drawing classrooms, and semi-private studios for senior BFA students in the drawing concentration.
