Deb Karpman: Revival

Opening reception: Thursday, October 7, 4:30-6:00 pm

Gallery talk with the artist starting at 5:00 pm

Deb Karpman's work explores the polarities between sturdiness and volatility, acceleration and collapse. Deriving from found images -- old, discarded, textbooks, field guides, and architectural diagrams -- the formations suggest choreographed animations, momentarily arrested in space but implying unremitting flux and transformation. The column-like shapes insinuate appendages, morphing from architectural structures into pictorial representations of an invented language. The constructions oscillate between collapsed stick figures, scaffolded habitats, archaic devices, and ritualistic objects.

Deb Karpman is an Assistant Professor of Art and Co-Director of Foundations at the University of Montevallo.
