Begun in 1968, Olympics Day is a significant tradition for University of Montevallo alumni. Many events and activities have changed and evolved throughout the years, but one thing has remained the same: it is a special time for alumni and friends to join together in athletic and social events, reminisce, and make new friends. Traditionally, athletic events have included golf, tennis, and a 5K run and were held the first Saturday in August. More recently, a racquetball tournament was added to the schedule, and for 2013, disc golf and corn hole toss tournaments will round out the event schedule, which has been shifted to October.
Message from Jim Methvin, UMNAA President regarding Olympics Day 2013:
“The University of Montevallo National Alumni Association (UMNAA) Board of Directors would like to announce that Olympics Day is being moved from August 3, 2013, to Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19, 2013. The Olympics Day Golf Tournament will be on Friday afternoon, and the Hope Bryant Smith Memorial 5K Run, the family run, other activities, and sporting events will be on Saturday. Most important, this year’s Olympics Day will be held in conjunction with activities planned by the Athletics Department and Student Affairs. All of the events will provide the university with a great opportunity to bring together alumni, students, and other UM supporters. All proceeds from Olympics Day and the Friends of Athletics events will go to the Hope Bryant Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The UMNAA considers the change as a pilot for this year and plans to develop and implement an assessment tool to evaluate the success of Olympics Day in relation to its purpose and the association’s mission. One of the major goals of this combined university initiative is to have activities that strengthen support among our alumni, students, and the entire University community.”
