Notetaking Support

Faculty/Staff Information

Notetaking support is provided for students whose documentation indicates an inability to effectively take their own notes in class. Students who qualify for notetaking support may recruit their own note-taker or may request that this be done through faculty. Notetaking support is generally considered a supplement to a student’s own notes and is not considered a substitute for a student’s full participation/attendance.  Notes may be withheld for dates involving unexcused absences.

If a student brings a faculty member an accommodation request letter listing notetaking support, DSS requests assistance in the following ways:

  • Feel free to approach a specific student if you feel he/she would be good (generally good grades, attendance, etc.)
  • Unless faculty prefer to approach a specific student, an announcement should be made, similar to:

“We have a need for a notetaker in this class. If you feel that you take good notes and would be willing to provide copies of your notes for use by another student, please see me after class or contact Disability Support Services 665-6250. DSS is located in the lower rear of Main Hall. Students serving as notetakers are paid a small stipend in exchange for copies of their notes.”

  • Do not identify the student needing the notetaker to the class in making the announcement, although the selected notetaker may later be told privately by our office.
  • Based upon the student need, notes may be requested to be copies, scanned or emailed to DSS.
  • Notetakers will be paid a small stipend at the end of the semester (amounts vary depending on credit hours and type of notes requested).
