Definition of Student Affairs Values

Principled leadership: Principled leadership is a style of working with people in which decisions are based upon a set of shared values that are explicit to all in the organization.  In the case of  Student Affairs at the University of Montevallo, these values include a focus on transformational learning, an understanding of our interdependence with one another, taking a personal/ individualized approach to our work with students and colleagues, and basing judgments on facts/data.

Transformational learning: Transformational learning refers to a type of learning that is characterized by a developmental approach. It is oriented toward change and continuous improvement. We understand that the process of becoming the type of people we strive to be is a lifelong journey. As a result we are all learners. Staff are committed to meeting students and colleagues where they are and partnering with them to achieve their goals and unique potential. Our success is measured by the success of others, our value added, and the extent to which we help to enhance a students’ understanding of her/himself and the world.  

Interdependence: The value of interdependence reflects an understanding of how our actions influence and are influenced by others as well as the importance of creating a strong sense of community among the students, faculty and staff on campus. As a result, we strive to help students develop a strong sense of ethical reasoning and social responsibility in order to more easily see beyond their own self interest. Ultimately it reflects our staff’s commitment to helping achieve a just and equitable society.

Personalized approach: A personalized approach to interacting with students and colleagues takes into account each individual’s unique experiences, talents and needs. It acknowledges and embraces the diversity found within the university community by tailoring our interventions to best fit the individual or group with whom we are dealing. It requires that we treat everyone with compassion.    

Data driven decision making: Decisions within Student Affairs will be made based on the best information and research available on the subject. We are committed to continuous improvement by using outcomes, satisfaction, program evaluation and other assessment to inform our planning.
