Sexual assault, sexual harassment and dating violence are often hidden from view.  You or someone you know may have experienced this problem. While the University of Montevallo has a very low percentage of violent crimes, the national statistics show that we should be prepared to handle assaults of this nature.  The psychological trauma caused by sexual crimes can be severe and long-lasting.

While students at the University of Montevallo are in a relatively safe environment, violence has no boundaries. 

Consider these statistics:

There is physical violence in 1/3 of all dating relationships

1 out of every 6 women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime

1 in 33 men will experience a sexual assault in their lifetime 

2/3 of all rape victims were attacked by a friend or acquaintance

1 in 5 undergraduate women are victims of attempted or actual sexual assault

1 in 16 undergraduate men are victims of attempted or actual sexual assault

It is reported that 20-25% of U.S. college women have experienced an attempted or completed rape during their college years.
