Ways to Reduce Your Risks

Sexual assault is never the responsibility of the person assaulted, but there are some ways you can reduce your risks.

Be aware of your surroundings and remain mentally alert

Plan your route and know where the “safe” places are

Walk in a group with a purpose

Carry a whistle or noisemaker

Stay in well lit, public streets and avoid dark isolated places

Keep gasoline in your gas tank

Keep your car doors locked

Have your keys ready when you are walking to your car

Keep your room locked and do not prop doors or window

Don’t let non-residents into residence halls

Trust your instincts

Try not to load yourself down… keep hands free

Take your cell phone with you

Avoid being isolated with someone you don’t know well

Avoid wearing your iPod or MP3 Player in both ears

Be computer safe – clear your cache, cookies and history

Have a code word you use to relay your discomfort

Lie to get out of an uncomfortable situation

Always have an escape route

Party in a group and have a buddy system

Practice safe drinking

Keep some cash on you at all times

Memorize important phone numbers
