Creating an Evidence-based Small Group Work Course

Laurel Hitchcock and Jason Newell

The purpose of our project was to create an undergraduate course that focuses on group work practice and development, using an evidence-based practice approach. This course will help our students learn how to find and integrate the best scientific evidence to develop and implement treatment and task groups.  This course was created (Social Work Practice with Groups) and is being taught for the first time this semester, Fall 2012.  It has been submitted for approval as a required course in the social work major curriculum. The course has the following student learning outcomes related to information literacy:

1. Apply critical thinking to inform and communicate professional judgments (IL Outcome #4 and #5)
2. Engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research (IL Outcome #1, #2 and #3)

The money from this grant was used to pay for travel for one faculty member to attend the Annual Program Meeting for the Council on Social Work Education which has a conference track related to group work.  Additionally, we purchased books and DVDs to aid the instructor in teaching this course from an evidence-based practice approach.
