Severe Weather

The University Police Department monitors the National Weather Service radio for severe-weather bulletins. Upon receiving a tornado warning, UM Police will warn the UM community with a continuous three-minute blast of a tornado siren.

When a warning is received on campus, persons should go immediately to the lowest level of the building they are in and take shelter in interior rooms or hallways, away from windows and doors. Persons outside a building when a warning is given should go to the nearest occupied building and seek shelter. Whenever a tornado warning is given on campus, persons should stay in the shelter area until the warning is lifted. Warnings are lifted by an "all-clear" signal of three short blasts on the siren.

In the event the siren is inoperative, University Police patrol cars will cruise the campus with sirens on and blue lights off, periodically announcing the warning on the vehicle PA system.
