The use of visual marks for identification has been in existence for centuries. In medieval times, for example, marks were used as a means of enabling the guilds to control trade.
Today, modern visual identification systems go far beyond the trademark or symbol. By unifying all communications from a given organization into a consistent design system, the business, agency or institution can establish a cohesive image to help in realizing identifiable goals.
Universities must operate in the same communications arena as corporations, governmental agencies and major institutions; therefore, to maximize name recognition and to consistently identify the University to various publics, guidelines must be established regarding elements that help protect Montevallo’s graphic identity.
Inarguably, the type and quality of information published by UM play important roles in establishing and/or maintaining the image of the institution to its many constituents. This Visual Standards Manual offers guidelines to help strengthen and enhance Montevallo’s graphic presence, as well.
