Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest and most selective academic all-discipline honor society in the nation. It was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine with thirteen original members. The UM Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi (Chapter 209) was chartered on December 16, 1978. Each year the UM Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi inducts members who are among the top students in their respective colleges. Today the National Society annually inducts 30,000 members from 285 colleges and universities in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Each chapter elects members into Phi Kappa Phi based on superior scholarship and good character. Initiates are from the upper 7.5 percent last-term juniors and upper 10 percent seniors, as well as exceptional graduates, faculty, professional staff, and alumni. Those inducted are the "best and brightest" and will play an important role in future economic, political, social, and educational existence.
