Greek Vocabulary 101
 

Alumni/ae:   members of a fraternity or sorority who have graduated from college
Bid:   a formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority
Chapter:   a campus division of a (inter) national sorority or fraternity
Initiate:   a fully initiated member of a fraternity or sorority
Legacy:   a potential member of fraternity or sorority who is related to a member of that fraternity or sorority
New Member:   an uninitiated member of a sorority who has been formally pledged
Hazing:   degrading mental or physical acts toward an individual; strictly forbidden by IFC, NPC, the University and the State of Alabama
Philanthropy:   a national or local charity for which a chapter does service projects and fundraisers
Potential Member:   a woman or man who has not yet pledged
Recruitment:   the activity by which fraternities or sororities and potential members become acquainted
Ritual:   the traditional ceremony of a fraternity or sorority
Interfraternity Council:   the central governing body on campus for nationally recognized men's chapters
Recruitment Counselor:   a disaffiliated member of a sorority serving as an assistant for Potential members during NPC Recruitment
Recruitment Team:   a group of disaffiliated women who run recruitment week
Panhellenic Council   the central governing body on campus for nationally recognized women's chapters
Black Greek Council   the central governing body on campus for National Pan-Hellenic Council recognized organizations.
