Self Assessment

A variety of career testing is available to students seeking to raise their self awareness and self knowledge. Career tests help students identify and define aspects of their personality related to interests, skills, and values. By matching personality traits with job related activities, these tests provide the information students need to insure they are making good decisions about their academic major or their career direction.

The tests provided in the Counseling and Career Center are useful tools in your career planning process. However, these assessment tools are only the beginning of the awareness process, not the end. Remember, there is no assessment tool that will make your career decisions for you!

Although career tests do not choose your career for you, students who have taken these tests have been pleased to discover that the decision making process was greatly improved by using the results from their career tests. Career testing is recommended as one of the most highly effective tools for students seeking to make decisions and set goals.

The UM Counseling and Career Center offers written and computer-based testing. In most cases, an interpretation session with a counselor is required.

SDS - Self Directed Search

This written assessment is a personality test that measures your interests. It is helpful in matching personality traits to appropriate career-related activities, occupational environments, and academic majors. This assessment takes about 30 minutes to complete, followed by an interpretation session with a counselor.

SIGI - System of Interactive Guidance & Information

This computer-based program combines several functions, including self-assessment, search options, information-gathering, and preparation. It measures interests, skills, and values and matches these characteristics with lists of relevant job titles. It provides detailed descriptions of occupations. Results include a computer printout.

PUM - Please Understand Me

This computer-based assessment is a personality test that measures individual preferences and orientations in interaction, relationships, communication, decision-making, and lifestyle. It is helpful in identifying personal traits and characteristics. Results include a computer printout.
