In Jefferson and Shelby counties, The Metropolitan Planning Organization is working with communities on more than 120 miles of new sidewalks or improvements to existing ones. There are plans for 29 miles of sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes in Birmingham alone.
The City of Montevallo and the Alabama Department of Transportation are hosting an open house on Feb. 27 to unveil plans for the $2.8 million Main Street downtown revitalization project.
The project includes plans for an overall improvement of Main Street to improve traffic-related issues on the roadway, fix sidewalks, ensure compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act and address aesthetic details along the route.
The entire project that includes funding from state and local matches will total $2.8 million, not including nearly $1 million that has been spent on the promenade sidewalk project that links the University of Montevallo and the city’s Orr Park through downtown along Boundary Street.
