University of Montevallo hosts forum on bullying

| Press Releases

MONTEVALLO—The University of Montevallo will host a forum on bullying featuring Jamie Nabozny on Wednesday, March 27, at 3:30 p.m., and Thursday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m., in the Merchants and Planters Bank Auditorium in Comer Hall on the UM campus.

Nabozny is the subject of a documentary, Bullied, that chronicles his childhood struggle with harassment that ended in a beating that resulted in hospitalization. After winning a landmark lawsuit in federal court that establishes the right to a safe educational experience for all young people including those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, Nabozny travels the country and shares his story to help prevent similar attacks on children in current times. He was recently named a Defender of Human Rights by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.

This forum is sponsored by the University of Montevallo Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the social work program and UM counseling services; the David Mathews Center for Civic Engagement; Safe Zone; Spectrum; and the Alabama Safe Schools Coalition. Both events are free and open to the public.

Nabozny will also speak at the third annual Alabama Region 4 National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) conference scheduled for Friday, March 29, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., in Anna Irvin Hall on the UM campus. Teachers and social workers may receive eight CEU credits, and counselors may receive eight LPC credits for attending the conference. The cost of the conference is $25 for students, $45 for NAME members and $65 for non-NAME members. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Registration is open until March 15 through http://www.montevallo.edu/coe/diversity.shtm.
