MONTEVALLO—The 2012 recipient of the University of Montevallo’s Alumnus Loyalty Award is Jeffrey Purvis, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in social work in 2002. After graduating from UM, Purvis went on to earn a Master’s Degree in social work from the University of Alabama. He was recognized at UM’s Founders’ Day convocation, held Oct. 11 in Palmer Hall.

He was employed for a number of years with the Alabama Department of Human Resources, eventually becoming a director of a facility for boys.

When the family business, A.C. Legg, called, Purvis joined the company as a business analyst, advising management on improvements and efficiency. He continues in that position today.

As an undergraduate student, Purvis was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha International Social Fraternity, serving as vice president and secretary and representing the fraternity on the Inter-Fraternity Council. He continues to support his fraternity as a chapter adviser. He also served as president of the IFC, vice president of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, vice president and regional vice president of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and as a Montevallo Master. He also was a member of several honorary societies and was Senior Elite in Social Work.

Today, Purvis continues to be active at the University, serving as treasurer of the Junior Board of Directors of the National Alumni Association. He represents Montevallo at many alumni and recruitment events and supports the University and, in particular, the Social Work Program with financial gifts. In a letter of recommendation, a colleague wrote, “He contributes monthly donations to the Social Work Program, which directly supports (sic) student activities such as attending conferences, providing textbooks for student use and improving technology in our classrooms. Additionally, Mr. Purvis attends all of the alumni events hosted by the Social Work Program and makes an effort to speak directly with students as a mentor, providing advice and encouragement. He has been doing this every year since his graduation in 2002.”

Recently, Purvis has taken on the role of unofficial mascot for UM’s athletic teams. Dressed in a purple bodysuit, he energizes the fans and cheers for the athletes.

In the words of one nominator, “Although he graduated from Montevallo more than 10 years ago, Jeff still spends much of his free time giving back to his University.”
